I friend of mine worked for the Chronicle's Mexico City bureau a few years back. He was a photographer. They were supposed to do a story about prostitution in Mexico City, so he, the journalist, and their driver went to find some whores in a neighborhood where whoring was rampant. When my buddy got caught taking pictures, their car was swarmed by hookers who proceeded to pound on the car, breaking windows, and trying to drag them out of the car, steal his camera, etc. The driver couldn't get away because the car was, literally, covered in prostitutes. Flooring it would have killed someone. My buddy wound up getting stitches and was all bruised up and cut up. We laughed at him for a bit when he told us this story several months later, but he was definitely shaken up and afraid for his life. I can't tell you what to do in Mexico City, but I can sure as hell tell you what not to do: Don't take pictures of Mexican hookers. Period.
Also, do not pickup any of those hookers. Unless you don't care about your penis. Do not flaunt money or jewelery. Do not take any good looking women with you anywhere unless you do not care about them, i.e. sisters, cousins, girlfriend/wife. If possible stay in area that has some police officers, and if you are in that area make sure you have some money on you to pay them off in case you need their help. Other than that, have fun.
Yea, probably alot worse. Thats not somewhere you wanna be walking around alone without a gun. Especially once it gets dark. Tell your friend to get married in Hawaii instead.
i was in matamoras celebrating a friends bachelor party. on the way home we got pulled over by the police. they wanted some money. but right at that moment, a news reporter jumped out of nowhere and started yell at the cops saying they were messing up the tourism. talk about luck!
In Mexico City, visit the National Museum of Anthropology. It boggles the mind... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Museum_of_Anthropology
San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful resort town in the mountains. Its like a small european village in that once you park your car or arrive there, you walk everywhere on the cobblestone roads. There is a great bar there called El Grito and lots of coffee shops and cafe's. I would suggest renting a house as there are many old churches and haciendas that are amazing rental homes for many people. Guanajuato is closeby and there are some landmarks there like the famous Pipila statue about a peasant who fought the Spanish and various other attractions. Its a beautiful area and enjoy it for the small town feel, and skip Mexico city unless you have friends there and like to party. Any questions, shoot me an email.
I guess I shouldn't go to D.F. for Thanksgiving. How could he invite me to meet rest of his family if he cared!? My parents' '96 explorer and '00 silverado got jacked off (they stole the rear mirrors) a couple of times we visited Monterrey back in the days.
Well as long as he does not take you out into the street to walk around after about 5pm, it will be fine. Just be sure to look like you have an attitude, and don't make eye contact with any men walking alone.
After 5pm? Having second thoughts now...I already don't like going to Mexico in first place because of pinche loco drivers and crime!
real de catorce is close to san miguel - where 'the mexican' was filmed. its a mining town 10,000 in the mountains - about 1,000 people live there and it feels like you have stepped back in time 100 years. if you want to do peyote this is THE place to go. guanajuato zacatecas - my favorite mexican city. you are going to need alot more than a couple weeks for that.
common sense dictates not to take pictures of hookers. be glad that it was only the ladies who came after him and not their pimps. you might not have seen him again.
yea after 5 is when the drunks come out. In Mexico everyone starts drinking around 4, so after 5 its drunks o'plenty in the streets. Most of the drunks I have seen are pretty tame though, but you never know.
ive traveled all over mexico from big cities to tiny indian villages and never felt like i was at risk. just use common sense and dont put yourself in bad situations, like taking pictures of hookers. houston is the most dangerous/sketchy place i have ever been (and i was born there!).
