Yao Ming went to Hsinchu this afternoon, and did a couple of things:

    • a sort of round-table discussion with IT executives that are basketball fans about basketball
    • a basketball clinic for some aboriginal school kids
    • playing Wii computer games with school kids
And in the process, he actually violated the original ban of no charity fund-raising activities from the Taiwan authorities.

70 of his autographed basketballs were auctioned/sold at NTD 100,000 each to the IT executives and raised NTD 7M (i.e. > US$ 200K) as funding for Taiwanese basketball programs for kids in some of Taiwan's remote and underdeveloped areas.

    BRAVO....Big Yao !!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, at least I have some common favorite as Yao Ming.

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2007-09-09/09293158349.shtml

When asked what are some of his favorite of Taiwanese cuisine, Yao Ming mentioned

    • ô-á-chian (蚵仔煎 ) - Oyster omelet made with eggs, oysters and Garland chrysanthemum leaves. It has a soft, sticky texture, and is eaten with a sweet and mildly spicy sauce, topped with cilantro. This dish is very common in night markets as it best represents the snack of the nation.
    • sān bēi jī (三杯鸡 ) - a chicken dish which literally translates as "three cups chicken", named because the sauce is made of a cup of rice wine, a cup of sesame oil, and a cup of soy sauce. Alternately, the sauce can also be made of a cup each of rice wine, sugar, and soy sauce.
Those were my favorites too when I studied university there in Taipei 30 some years ago.

And if I'm not mistaken, in the photo shown above, Yao Ming was enjoying ô-á mī-sòaⁿ (蚵仔麵線 ), or oyster vermicelli, a thickened soup containing small oysters and Chinese vermicelli.

it gets very complicated in Taiwan ...

my understanding is a "native taiwanese" just means someone who was born in taiwan

then there are "ben sheng ren" or "local province people", who came to Taiwan (province) from Mainland China about 300 years ago. They are the majority, and they share a local dialect with people from southern Fujian province, where they came from.

And there are "wai sheng ren" or "outer province people", who came to Taiwan quite recently in 1949 when they lost the Chinese civil war to the Communists. They are the minority.

last, there are the aboriginals, who are the very original inhabitants of the island, but makes up a very tiny portion of the whole population now. by all accounts, they speak some sort of Chinese dialect.

Yao Ming led a celebrity team including his old Shanghai Sharks team mate, the Doctor Cheng Chih-lung and played against the SBL All Stars led by Sean Chen this morning (September 9, 2006) at the stadium of the National Taiwan University.

Even though it was supposedly to be a friendly, Yao Ming still played 25 minutes, scored 26 points, with 6 of them being dunks. He also provided lots of assists (including some no-look over the shoulder passes) to his team mates, which included even female players and his Chinese agent Lu Hao. In one particular play, Yao Ming intercepted the ball in his own half of the court, and sprinted and dribbled across the court like a point guard, and then went for a dunk which caused roars from the stands. He also scored a couple of long range jumpers and hook shots and even a 3-pointer.

He just gave his all and demonstrated all his basketball skills that awed the SBL All Stars.

After the game, he bid farewell to his friends and fans in the stadium, saying he will miss them, but he hoped he could come back soon.

He left Taiwan 15:00pm this afternoon for Beijing (probably via Macau or Hong Kong).

Maybe only basketball charities are OK.
And if Yao take part in any other form of charity, he would destroy the beloved democracy of Taiwan. Well, at least the government there believes this.

BTW, Yao was 2 out of 3 from beyond the arc. Maybe Adelman will turn Yao into Brad Miller next season. :D

Why doens't he do this in the All-Star games. C'mon if Shaq can clown and dribble between his legs then Yao sure can.

Yao Ming is back from Taiwan, and appeared this morning over a sohu.com online chatroom Q&A session with his fans.

Very lengthy Q&A with lots of titbits about

    • His Taiwan visit
    • The Yao & Nash Charity Gala
    • His view on life after marriage
    • His body condition/rehabilitation status
    • His outlook of the national team's prospect in 2008 Olympics and Chinese basketball
    • His thoughts on the return of Steve Francis
    • His thoughts on the return of Deke Mutombo
    • His thoughts on the joining of Luis Scola
    • His thoughts on whether he could adapt to Rick Adelman's systems
    • His thoughts about the new "It's Time" slogan of the Rockets
No time for the translation of the transcript now. So stay tune for it in another 8 hours or so.
