I think I'm one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, Robotech fan on here, and I think Tobey Maguire is all wrong for the lead. What are they gonna tell me next? Halle Berry is going to play Claudia?
maguire is too old to play rick hunter. in every role he's played there are always occasions where mcguire comes off as if he'd be perfect for the role of melvin in the toxic avenger. anyway they need a bunch of unknowns. if robotech is anything like transformers i'll be very disappointed. for starters directors like michael bay and robert rodriguez need to stay away. hollywood will get a live action robotech movie all wrong. robotech/macross is like a dramatic romantic comedy with a scifi eye candy backdrops and elements of a truffaut/cassavetes film. they'll typically turn it into a cgi-fest with a dumb romantic interest thing added in. plus hollywood has never made a romantic comedy that was either romantic or funny in decades. i'm expecting them to churn out an updated "inner space"
I would have to do some research on it. On looks alone, a younger Adrien Grenier would be a good fit.
Shia Labeouf as Rick and Megan Fox as Lisa. Pacino as Gloval, strangely enough. Seriously though, if Tobey is attached to this I have a little hope that this won't be a suckfest. Like hooroo said, I'm afraid they'll miss the whole vibe of the show. Probably get all the characters wrong and make everyone macho fighter pilots. I shudder to think what they'll do w/ Minmei and the songs, if they even include that aspect. It might be Fergie singing London Bridges or some s***. Can't wait to see how they CGI the SDF-1 though. I love this show and it has great potential as a trilogy if they would pay as much focus on the character development as well as the giant robots.

Tobey is a great fit for Rick. He's a great actor who's getting undeserved hate for doing Spidey movies.
Wow..is this transformers 2? He is a good actor but he's entirely wrong for Rick Hunter. And I doubt anyone hates him as Peter Parker.
if hollywood needs a name to play rick hunter i'd say jesse mccartney. his age and the shape of his face is about right. lisa is harder to cast. she needs to look like an older woman and less pretty than minmei. definately go for an unknown. for minmei i'd suggest a japanese popstar named olivia lufkin. she's older but maybe they can pass her off as a teenager. breetai, harry hamlin. makeup won't even have to touch the eyebrows.
If its going to be a trilogy, then I dont think the first one should focus on the romantic aspects. If you take the series as a whole, the show is really about a struggle against an alien invasion that spans generations. The first movie should really try to set this up - focusing on the "epicness" of the war. Think Lord of the Rings or Star Wars.
