Argentina beats Brazil and will defend its Olympic gold medal in Beijing

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Argentina will get to defend its Olympic gold medal.

Luis Scola scored 27 points and Argentina, playing without four NBA players from the team that won the gold in 2004, beat Brazil 91-80 on Saturday in the semifinals of the FIBA Americas tournament to earn a berth in the Beijing Olympics.

Scola, who signed with the Houston Rockets, and Carlos Delfino, who plays for the Toronto Raptors, were the NBA stars for this Argentina team, which lost one game in this tournament -- 91-76 to the United States in the second round.

The four NBA players from the gold medal team -- Manu Ginobili, Fabricio Oberto, Andres Nocioni and Walter Herrmann -- are all expected to join Argentina for the 2008 Olympics.

Argentina, the winner of the United States-Puerto Rico semifinal, China, the host, Spain, the reigning world champion and zone champions Iran, Angola and Australia have all earned berths in Beijing. Two European entrants will be decided this month.

Brazil, the loser of the United States-Puerto Rico semifinal and fifth-place finisher Canada all advanced to a 12-team qualifying tournament next July that will determine the final berths in Beijing.

Brazil, despite losing center Nene to a knee injury four minutes into the game, was able to take a 51-40 lead with 7:13 left in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Leandro Barbosa.

That's when Scola and Delfino stepped up, proving they were stars of this Argentina team.

With Scola attacking the basket and Delfino finally finding his touch, Argentina closed the quarter with a 25-5 run that gave it a 65-56 lead. Scola had 10 points and Delfino, who missed his first six shots from the field until this run, added seven points.

Just like in their second-meeting, which Argentina won 87-69 in overtime, Brazil stayed close, getting within three points twice in the final 1:44.

After two free throws by Alex Garcia brought Brazil within 79-76, Scola drew two defenders to him then made a drop pass inside to Federico Kammerichs for a layup that restored the five-point lead with 1:29 left. Tiago Splitter scored on a putback for Brazil to make it 81-78 with 1:14 left but Paolo Quinteros of Argentina hit his only 3-point attempt of the game with 55 seconds left to start a 7-0 run that put the game away.

Delfino finished with 13 points for Argentina, which will be making its fifth Olympic appearance with the gold in Athens its only medal.

Barbosa, who plays for the Phoenix Suns, had 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting for Brazil. In the earlier meeting, Barbosa, the tournament's leading scorer at 23.5 points per game, had 16 points on 5-for-18 shooting.

Nene entered the game averaging 9.3 points and 7.0 rebounds. When he injured his leg he left for the locker room and did not return.

Brazil's last Olympic appearance was in 1996.

Luis Scola demonstrated his leadership and that he is a winner to obtain the ticket to 2008 Olympicsfor his country when they came from behind to beat Brazil 91 vs 80 in the semi final.

    Luis Scola played the full 40 minutes, and scored 27 points (10/14 FG% 7/12 FT%) /9 rebounds/2 assists.

They will play USA again in the final.

I heard from somewhere that the whole Brazil team refused to listen to their head coach for the whole game.

Anyways Scola's steady performance really impressed me instead of Vspan's flashes. hmmm wonder why we didn't want batista in the first place

Scola for ROY. Right now I think he's one of the top three favorites, Durant might have a better shot because he'll be Option #1 on a crappy team but if Scola is the main reason the Rockets are significantly better then he'll have just as good an argument.

    My guess for 07-08: 13.5 PPG 8.5 RPG 2.2 APG 1.5 T/OPG

Scola's setady performances really impressed me a lot and I am sure he will be of great help to Yao and Tmac in the new season.

But what role will he fit into the rox team?

    3rd scorer?
    6th man?
    leader?

he shows good scoring touches, but will he be the 3rd scorer? The first 2 option will always be Tmac and Yao. Hence the 3rd scorer will again i guess a 3p shooter like james, head and battier. Bonzi, francis, scola are players that works better without yao in the middle clogging the lanes.

he shows that he can play alot of minutes, but with the other PF an offensive challenge Chuck hayes, scola could and should come in and provide energy and points off the bench.

he leads the argentinean team, but could he provide leadership to a vet team like rox when he is only a rookie?

Scola doesn't have to be a the 3rd scorer.. the 6th man.. a leader.. or whatever. All I want him to do is put up legit numbers for a solid PF and be decent on defense.

He's not going to be the 3rd scorer because he likely won't get many plays run for him. Mostly, his job will be to hustle, run the floor, rebound, play defense and get as many garbage baskets as he can. He might occasionally get an opportunity in the post, but my bet is that it will be rare.

Guys like Francis and James have better chances to be consistent scorers because they will have the ball. Depending on injury, Wells could also have chances in this offense.

But, really, it doesn't matter as long as they play well together.

If Scola makes half the wide open layups that Hayes blows, then I can see him consistently netting in double figures. We do have a pretty deep squad this year, so if he ends up being our 3rd scorer I wouldn't be surprised.

How many times have we seen pictures of Scola celebrating emphatically after a big play? Definitely, Scola can be an emotional leader on this team. No offense to Yao or Tmac, but they're not the type of players who will instill a passion in others during the game. And I'm not worried about him being a rookie; he certainly doesn't carry himself as one.

I don't know if Scola can be a "third scorer", considering that it seems that he gets most of his points in the flow of offense. He's the type of player that won't demand a lot of touches, but will score with high efficiency in limited shot attempts, which is why i think that he's okay starting next to Yao. Energy is what we need fom the bench, and Chuck Hayes is perfect for that role.

Good point and early on this is what may happen. Eventually NBA defenses will adjust and guard Scola which will open up things for other players. Teams will figure out that an open Scola will hurt them more than a single-covered Yao and Tracy. Plus, Scola knows how to pass out of the high post, which is awesome.

Over the course of the season, I seriously doubt Scola gets as many wide open layups off double teams as Chuck did because teams will respect him.

Man..that's Argentina at 1/4 strength. I think Argentina at full strength will give the USA team all they can handle.

Scola will average 15 points this year. He should definitely be the rockets 3rd scorer.
