link I didn't post the article because you have to click each one. I'll post them all in a few minutes. "The Truth about Charlie" is number 22, actually liked that movie. I saw "The Hitcher" (1986 version) the other night. That is a bad ass movie, I don't even want the new version to disappoint me. No 12
City of Angels was okay. I've never seen the movie it was based on, but on its own it's fine. At the very least, it isn't bad enough to be so high up on the list.
25. Meet Joe Black 24. Alfie 23. The Lady Killers 22. The Truth About Charlie 21. Poseidon 20. Planet of the Apes 19. The Pink Panther 18. City of Angels 17. Down to Earth 16. House of Wax 15. Stepford Wives 14. The Ring 2 13. All the King's Men 12. The Hitcher 11. 101 Dalmations 10. Godzilla 9. The Island of Dr. Moreau 8. The Out of Towners 7. Get Carter 6. When a Stranger Calls 5. Swept Away 4. The Wickerman 3. The Fog 2. Roller Ball 1. Psycho edit: never knew so many movies were reamakes, I was shocked one day watching television and "The Mummy" is a remake from like 1935. I guess it really is hard to come up with new ideas.
Poisedon was pretty decent, the scene where Douglas gives up his life is actually pretty decent. Sorry if I should have put spoiler for anyone, doubt anyone is seeing it right now.
They forgot Angles in the Outfield. The original is one of my favorite movies. The remake is almost unwatchable.
i was not aware Alfie and Meet Joe black were remakes, i like them both. The Carrie remake was left out from the list, that movie was just as bad as the Psycho one.
Poseidon was pretty damn horrible. Am I the only one that liked the new Hitcher and Dr. Moreau? Godzilla was pretty awesome actually.
It is very disappointing if you've seen Wings of Desire, particularly if you'd seen it first. The original was very 'pure' and clean in its story and the emotions it evoked. It was almost stark in its beauty. I know that sounds like a bunch of pretentious crap, but it is the best way I can express it. For the Hollywood version they grafted on a bunch of formulaic chinsy faux-baroque BS, starting with the addition of the love story which is absolutely a typical and cliché Hollywood-ism. It’s like taking a beautiful minimalist painting and framing it with the ugliest overwrought gauche faux gold frame available at some cheap furniture store. Wings of Desire was a beautiful piece of art in the form of a movie. City of Angels was a decent Hollywood potboiler. Its not that the remake is so bad, but that the gap from the original to the remake is so extreme and adds many things that are so clearly automatic Hollywood formulas for adding success at box office. Again I appreciate that this all sounds very pretentious, but this is honestly the only way I can describe it. Wings of Desire is pretty much the #1 example out there of what would typically be described as a "European Art Film". It is different from anything that Hollywood puts out and undoubtedly would be slow and off-putting for most people. But from the film, the phrase is forever embed in my memory: 'Als das Kind ein Kind war....' And one more that I would add to the list that fails for the same reasons is Solyaris which is a beautiful and haunting Soviet film, while the modern remake has been 'Hollywood-ized'.
BTW two best remakes I can think of are: A Guy Named Joe -> Always The Thing From Another World -> The Thing both remakes were much better than the originals.
I liked The Wickerman remake. But then again I never saw the original, so I can't really compare the two.
i'll throw in a couple of remakes of 80's movies that kicked arse that were remade into garbage... "just one of the guys">"she's the man" and "can't buy me love">"love don't cost a thing"
You're confusing that with the porno, "Meet Black Joe" / I like Meet Joe Black, Claire Forlani at her hottest.
