Stars billboard makes light of NBA referee scandal

DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars may have already taken themselves out of the running for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy -- the NHL's award for "sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct."

As part of the team's "come into the cold" ad campaign to sell seats for 2007-08, the Stars took a shot at the NBA's referee scandal on a billboard near the American Airlines Center, the building the Stars share with the Dallas Mavericks.
The message? "The only thing our refs shave is the ice."

But Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn't seem to mind, according to the Dallas Morning News.

"I think it's hysterical," Cuban told the newspaper. "Good for them. It's a fun ad."

The campaign, dreamt up by the Stars and Austin, Texas ad agency Door Number 3, is aimed at conveying the toughness of hockey players in an edgy style. One board reads "One game a week? Is the N in NFL for Nancy?" the Morning News reported.

Even baseball was not immune, despite the fact Stars owner Tom Hicks also owns the Texas Rangers: Another billboard reads "Maybe baseball should stop using the word sacrifice," according to the Morning News.

Stars president Jim Lites said Hicks laughed at that one, the newspaper said.

NBA Commissioner David Stern, who was made aware of the Stars' ad campaign on Thursday afternoon, said through a league spokesman that he had no comment, according to the report.

The Stars didn't take a swipe at the NBA without some reservations, Lites told the Morning News.

"It's edgy. But we're really good friends with the Mavs. They're our partners in the building. I think we thought it would be taken the right way," Lites told the newspaper. "It's not a slap at them. It's more of a snip. I think the same goes for the Cowboys. The NFL is the big daddy."

I dont see how they laugh at the NBA betting scandel, when Rick Tocchet just got through his gambling ring issues that involved the great Wayne Gretzky's wife.

Its also sad that more people will see that billboard, then an actual NHL game this year.

I'm sorry, I really can't stand idiots. People watch hockey in Dallas. It's the most marketable NHL team in the South. The Stars averaged a higher attendance than the Rockets. Even I take time out of my schedule to attend/watch games.

I get the NBA and NFL references, but I am clueless about the MLB reference. Is that supposed to be a swipe at the whole Bud Selig attending Bonds' games situation?

I can understand if you may not want to watch hockey...but I don't understand why there are so many Anti-Hockey people on this board. I don't like baseball, but I don't go around saying "nobody gives a ****" when a rookie pitches a no-hitter.

My animosity is not towards hockey necessarily. It's against Dallas sports.

It doesn't. However, it was an inutile post and really ticked me off. It's like me saying "more people will look at the moon than actually get a chance to walk on it." Yeah, no duh, Sherlock.

My point was really simple in that there are a number of people out there who enjoy hockey. When the Stars actually have a higher attendance than the Rockets, then they must be doing something right!

Anyways, this isn't in the hangout so I'm not going to go any further. I did see the "N for Nancy" billboard yesterday on 75 and Southwestern and got a good laugh at it. I solely came in here to post just that, but of course, I saw Yao#1's post...

Yes going to a hockey game versus walking on the moon is a good comparison. Way to make your point Sherlock.

As for attendance, any commissioner would take tv ratings over attendance. That is where the money is. The NFL could play their games in empty stadiums and generate 10 times the revenue of the NHL simply by people watching on TV. The NBA finals ratings sucked this year, and probably still outdid the NHL by five times.

Besides, did you create hockey? Why did you get so ticked off? It is okay for the NHL, a professional sports league to make fun of other sports, but you go nuts over a single person on a fan forum making fun of the NHL. Go walk on the moon.
