I just dug up some grass to plant flowers, how do I replant the grass in other spotty areas? I tried this before but they always die. Any suggestions?

Ah, I thought so, but since you misspelled it twice, I thought maybe it was some word I didn't know about.

    Here's what I do:

Break up the soil where the grass will be planted (this makes it easier for the grass to build roots).

remove some (not all) of that soil. Replace it will potting soil or (if you want to spend the money) Miracle grow. Don't put too much down or you'll have a mound. Don't skimp, either, or you'll have a hole or recessed area. It's better to err on the skimpy side, though. It's always easier to sprinkle soil on it later to build it up. It's much harder to flatten it if it's a mound.

sprinkle that soil with water. Don't get it wet enough for it to become muddy.

Take the grass that you'll transplant and (assuming it's St. Augstine grass) poke the ends of the grass runners into the soil. do this all over the area until it is covered.

scatter a small amount of soil on top of that grass.

Water the hell out of it (every day for over an hour). Do this for more than a week (maybe two weeks).

How did you pull up the grass? You should dig up sections with a flat shovel, so it resembles sod - with some dirt underneath. If you've done that, you're in good shape. If not......good luck.

Take the sod and lay it directly on the ground....stomp it down, and the main thing is to keep it watered. Water it daily until the roots take.

On a similar note, for anyone wanting a "cure it all" solution to St. Augustine, start fertilizing w/ cornmeal. You can get 50 lb bags at your local feed store for $8-$9 each, which is a hell of alot cheaper than fertilizer. Use 15lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.

My neighbor turned me on this a few months ago. I did it once a month. My lawn, despite being exposed to the sun all day long (no shad), is thick, dark, green and disease/insect fee. I used to spend almost $100 every 6 weeks for Scotts, fungus control and insect control and never got half the results I get now.

WOW! Thanks for the tip! Did you fertilize using only cornmeal? Or did you add corn meal to an existing fertilization schedule?

    Only cornmeal. Nothing else.

Most swear by it and the rest say it doesn't work at all. I was told up front that it has to be done religiously Every 4 weeks, no later. 15 lbs/1,000 sq. ft.

For eight or nine bucks, it's worth a shot, right?
