Anybody else thinking of getting it today? I might pick it up on the way home from work if I can find it. I desperately need something to re-validate my Wii purchase and by all accounts, this is the game to do it (until Smash Bros. Brawl anyway). Some reviews... GameSpy.com 9.0 IGN.com 9.5 GameSpot 8.5 1UP.com 9.0 GameDaily 9.0 GameTrailers 9.6 Nintendo Power 10.0 Apparently the controls are excellent, so no worries there. I'm excited.
Is it playable without the Wii-mote!? I'm the kind of gamer who stays completely still when playing, so all that hand action isn't for me. As much as I love Metroid, I for one don't enjoy playing with it, so its a pass for me. But when Brawl comes out.......
I'm picking it up this evening. This was one of the games that made me choose the Wii over the PS3. I'll pass judgement later.
how can anyone play metroid games w/o a walkthrough guide is beyone me. although i finished the first metroid on nintendo through hours of play, the games are so freakin' massive in exploration.
Yep. I tried to play Prime on Gamecube but never got very far because I kept having those "what the f*ck do I do now?" moments. Better than no challenge at all though.
i think its pretty lame to buy a walkthrough guide, no offense. Although, occasionally i will look online for a hint if i get stuck or impatient in a game, but its rare. But i felt the same way a couple of times on prime. I remember one part where i literally spent 3 hours retracing my steps and checking every freaking corner/inch of the map. But the reviews look great, gamespot is always selling the Wii short. I remember they gave Scarface a crap score and everyone else gave them a decent score. What was really funny was the reviewer said the controls were horrible, yet the other reviewers said it was a strength of the game. Not to mention the review said it was the only sand box style game on the wii.... needless to say it was not the 1st and was he outrageously wrong. yes, but the aiming will be great. Its not like you will have to move that much for other actions.
I bought the game, and I'm not a metroid fan at all really. what I will say is this: (disclaimer: I am a pc fps guy, I've competed at a professional level on consoles as well in halo, and I've gone back to pcs because I prefer mouse / keyboard) I will never ever ever touch another console fps without the wiimote. the game is gorgeous, hands down the best looking game on the wii, and I'm a huge zelda fanboy. the consoles are rock solid. I like the exploration aspect. if you have a wii, it's a must have. the boss fight (I've only played the first one...also keep in mind I'm playing on "veteran" [hard]) that I have played, was the ****, and I hear the boss fights are phenomenal later on. if you're into console fps, you'll never want to go back after this. as to the guy talking about nintendo rating the game a 10...nintendo power is actually pretty fair in their ratings. if you look at the ratings the game is receiving, they added about .5 over the average. anywho, like I said. if you have a wii, stop reading this **** and go buy the game. I am dreading work right now, I just want to go back and play. also...gamespot is garbage. they lowballed the **** out of original xbox games, and now the wii games. in other words, they're idiots.
Not trying to take this too far off-topic, but Scarface (Wii) has an average critic score of 72 at Metacritic, which isn't that great. Gamespot did give it a 5.8, which is a decent gap from the average, but that wasn't even close to being the lowest score, and there were plenty of other scores in that region from other reviewers as well. I wouldn't really single out Gamespot there...just seems like another case of a game that received mixed reviews (some liked the game/controls, others hated it).
Gamespot kills me with their purposefully low scores to gain attention. I sense another Zelda TP 8.8 fiasco coming. Of course, in gamespot's eyes the pinnacle of gaming came about with Tony Hawk 3 (which got a 10 from them), so one should know what to expect.
I remember that (both of them I might add). the most hilarious part about their reviews, is they'll say how great the game is...then deduct a point for the most minor issues. pros: BEST GAME EVER. BEST GRAPHICS. BEST GAMEPLAY cons: I lost a frame during the intro score: 8.9 they try to be elite with their scores / reviews, but...other sites give just as good if not better written articles. it's amusing.
i thought they gave it lower. oh well, the part about the guy claiming it was the first sandbox style game was more of the glaring weakness of the review. But to be honest maybe it did deserve that lower score since i didnt play it.
I'll be getting it eventually; but I do hope the boss fights aren't so f***ing drawn out ike in Echoes. I'm not a fan of boss battles to begin with and Metroid seems to take them to the extreme. I haven't even finished Echoes; I've played the last battle just once and have yet to go back after hearing how long it is.
lolz...you guys are cracking me up. I'm still spending all of my time going head-to-head on Wii Sports with my five year old. Woot bowling with 91 pins in the lane!
I think maybe you guys just have an issue with Jeff Gerstmann. I just checked out the reviews for some of these games (Scarface, Zelda, TH3, etc.), and I think he reviewed all of them. Generally speaking, I prefer Gamespot's reviews over all the other reviewers (except for Gametrailers...they're easily the best IMO, but they just give video reviews AFAIK). I like them being a little harder on some games than other reviewers (some reviewers are WAY too generous), although I think other reviewers are even harsher (a 7 or 8 usually means a must buy at some places). Of course, I'm trying not to really care too much about the scores anymore (yeah, I know I'm usually the first to mention scores...). A lot of reviews nowadays seem to have scores that contradict what the text review says (or even text within a review that contradicts what was said earlier in the review, but that's another story). Seems better just to look at the pros and cons and/or conclusion about the game's quality, and use that to decide how good the game is (whether it is a must buy, a purchase after a price drop, a rental, a game to avoid at all costs, etc.). Whenever I try to review a game, that's usually how I do things, rather than assigning some sort of score to the game. Not that most of this matters as demos start to become more and more popular (why take their word for it when you can try it yourself for free?). I think he actually says something about there not being anything else quite like Scarface on the Wii, not that it was the first sandbox game (though you could take it that way...that may have been edited in later as well). Godfather was the only other sandbox game available for the Wii at the time right, or am I forgetting some other game(s)? I haven't played either game (on any platform, let alone the Wii), but perhaps Scarface has some elements to it that differentiate it from Godfather. Or maybe not, and he really did mean that it was the first sandbox game. That seems like a minor thing though. I've seen much, MUCH worse from reviewers like IGN, EGM/1UP, Gamespy (IIRC), Game Informer, Eurogamer, Famitsu, etc. Usually just straight up lies about how the game plays, little to no information on certain aspects of the game (or just the game period), text that seems to contradict what the reviewer said (or had said in other reviews), or scores that were influenced by exclusive offers from the publisher.
Yeah, he didn't review MP3, although I didn't think you guys were complaining so much about that game's review (or the score anyway). A 8.5 is (tied) for the lowest score for the game so far, but it doesn't seem that far from the average (91), especially since Gamespot's scores are a little lower than average (maybe even more so now since they don't go in increments of .1). The complaints seemed somewhat valid in the video review I watched, although having not played MP3 (or any of the MP games), I can't really say for sure (EX: they say it is more of the same from the franchise, but maybe there is some innovation in this game that they missed, or something like that).
tony hawk was more of the same...didn't stop them from inflating the scores on it for at least 2 generations after they gave it a 10. the truth is, each game that's definitely been an A level game has gotten a B from gamespot. they have yet to give a game a 9 for wii. Paper mario, zelda, and now metroid all are at least worthy of a 9 and not one has gotten that. now, this is all subjective, but I still stand by what I say...gamespot is dumb. you don't hear me complaining about the other sites because I believe their reviews to at least make some sense.
This game is the reason I'm going to get a Wii. As far as the walkthrough discussion, Metroid Prime was massive and I could see how someone could get annoyed with not knowing where to go but all you had to do was piece the lore together and use the hint system. It wasn't difficult IMO. Junkyard Dawg: The final battle in Echoes isn't as fun as Prime's but it still holds its own. I think the Quadraxis (huge robot) battle is the best one in the game.
