Dunno if y'all know this, but the US Olympic Boxing Team Trials are being held at the George R. Brown from Monday 8/20 through Sunday 8/26. 8/26 is an "as needed date" (in case of delays, weather problems, etc). The final matches to determine who is on the Olympic boxing team are on Saturday 8/25 at 7PM. Two buddies and I have ringside seats for that night. We're going to meet downtown (probably at Live Sports, Mr. Stack!) and start boozing it up around 5PM. Cigars, whiskey and boxing! Tickets are being sold on Ticketmaster. For more info, check out the Harris County Sports Authority website.... I think this is going to be a fun night! You just might see a future world champ!
Wow, sounds cool. Didn't know about this. I'll see if I can get some tickets for my dad and uncles too.
One of my dad's childhood friends, Bubba Busceme, boxed in the Munich Olympics. I'm sure my dad would love to see this. Thanks for the tip!
Me and two buddies have ringside seats for the finals on Saturday night. We will probably start getting liquored up early at Live before stumbling over to the George R. Brown. It's going to be a great night (and week) of boxing in downtown H-Town.
I was told after I parked this morning that I can use the parkign ticket as admission to G R Brown to see the matches.
i scored ringside seats from a buddy, but all they say is ringside, no section or seat number......is it just first come first serve for seats? also, they are selling beer here i hope. anybody who has gone already help a brother out? thanks
It was first come, first serve for the ringside seats, and yes, they had beer. I had a blast man, there were some good fights tonight. I came away very impressed by Rau'shee Warren. He qualified for the Olympics for the second time and absolutely dominated his guy to win. He was up like 23-1 when the ref stopped the fight in the 2nd. A kid from Duncanville, TX Luis Yanez also dominated and won his fight. It was a good time. Got to see Vernon Forrest, Evander Holyfield, Raul Marquez, and Rocky Juarez. Juarez is tiny man, but he was very cool and down to earth. He had a hot chica with him too.
Had a good time, too. My brother-in-law got me to take a picture of him with Holyfield. Yeah, that kid was really really good. He dominated the fight from the opening bell.
Weslinder....you going today for the remaining finals? That kid from Houston who won last night to force another match today, can't remember his name or his opponents, but i do remember they had the same last name.....that was a good fight. i'm going back at 2pm today to watch the rest.
What a fun night! Sitting ringside was a blast. Seemed like we were in the parents/relatives/trainers section right next to admin area where the USA boxing people were and where the fighters were warming up. We were sitting right behind Evander Holyfield. Me and my maign Longwind Larry had our pic taken with Evander too (waiting on it to arrive via email). Got to chat with Rocky Juarez...very cool. We hit Live Sports Cafe for dinner and a few rounds earlier (Stack....I asked the waitress to ask you to stop by but you weren't there). The George R. Brown was a great place to hold the event. Happy they were selling drinks there too! Whoooeee, we tied one on. At the end of the night, we kept bugging the people at the USA boxing table...they had a bowl full of beer bottles on ice that nobody was drinking...told them that was alcohol abuse, so they gave them to us! Hell, we even hit the Flying Saucer on the way home. Glad we took the train! All in all, a fun night if you love boxing. I can't make it back at 2PM today either. But...damn glad I went last night. It was great.
