actually, this china vs. taiwan topic has been discussed here like a zillion times already. both sides don't have anything new to say. it kinda bores me now.
on a side note, i'm surprised that these forums haven't been censored in mainland china yet, given the amout of anti-chinese-government posts occurred.

As a Taiwanese I think the government is stupid and short sighted to pull a stunt like this. Perhaps it is a continuation of the olympic row, but this is still a charitable effot by a mega celebrity, and to invoke politics over the well being of the poor is plain bull****.

This is in light of Taiwans efforts to get into the WHO by claiming humanitarian goals should trump politics.

The way the Chen regime has carried out his term has been a disgrace, but it doesn't invalidate a democratic system. It's up for the Taiwanese to decide for their best interests, whether it be reuinification or de facto independence. Eventually if mainland Chinese choose to decide their desinty on their own, then that'd be a great day for all Chinese brothers and sisters.

Did you know that like Hong Kong which the British had returned its sovereignty to China in 1997, Macau was also returned to become a SAR (Specialized Administrative Region) of China by Portugal in 1999 under the 1 Country 2 Systems arrangement ?

Learn how to type and spell before you call people "freakin insecure dumbass" (by the way, the word should be plural, as you are referring to more than one.) Great way to insult people with your last sentence. How old are you? 10?

The US won't let China invade Taiwan unless they have an agreement about American business interests in Taiwan. TW is like Cuba revisited instead of Casinos, hotels, and plantations it's factories and assembly plants for a lot of the big guns in the US tech industry.

Sadly, Yao is just China's political pawn/PR exercise in this.

Taiwanese Aborigines seem plenty different to Chinese people.

Tell me HOW ?? To spend money out of his own pocket for a hectic 2 days' visit for raising money for the intellectually inadequate/deficiency and the basketball sports of Taiwan?

He has alot other better things to do other than being China's political pawn....dude !!

To address the topic of the thread -- it is ridiculous that Taiwan is not allowing Yao to come over for a visit.

As for the issue of Taiwan's independence -- they are independent right now -- if China was going to retake the island they should have done it decades ago.

    Way too late now.

It took China over 50 years to take hongkong and macau back, so it's never too late to take taiwan(which were part of china for several thousand years) back.

it doesn't matter. he's a symbol. and its understandable, even if you disagree, that taiwan isn't comfortable letting the giant sized icon of china to come in.

How could it be possible that a democratic regime would be so paranoid about a visit from world famous sportsman conducting charitable events?

The only explanation is that democracy as we know is overrated, a farce, a joke, a circus, a pretentious and hypocritical alternative to a centralized regime.

    To wit democracy in action:

    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gZhPmTg4jvc"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gZhPmTg4jvc" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Well, maybe for entertainment value, democracy is still underrated.

they are like what, 5% of the entire population. besides, most of them speaks chinese. and one of their most vocal leader, an actress, is very anti-japanese. they've gone to japan and protest in that shrine. that's not what the pro-independence folks are doing.

You are a self important, ironically condescending buffoon, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. When your prancing and preening isn't offensive, I am embarrassed for you.
