Lol, this is really funny, first Taiwan rejects some cute pandas because they might pose a threat or something funny like that, and now they bar Yao Ming from visiting Taiwan. I dunno, maybe he carries with him communist speeches or something. I mean come on, if that's the case then Taiwan should bar all Chinese from even entering Taiwan for a fear that they'll revolt or something. Seriously, it's slightly amusing.

The political history of this, however, isn't as laughable. I remember reading in the papers that a 7-day battle plan to 'capture' Taiwan would be realistic by the Chinese military, however it would involve soldiers landing in the famous Memorial hall and quite possible destroying it, which is a mortifying thing to do, considering the relics in it and of course Doc. 孫中山‘s papers. China has be trying to cut off Taiwan's attempts at being part of the world stage (barred from the UN, not part of the WTO I think), which are merely aggressive attempts to stop Taiwan's independence, compared to subtle ways like opening up planes directly from China to Taiwan. My own opinion is that I frankly don't mind to much whether Taiwan is independent or not, but I do think that in the end China will be forced to take military action against Taiwan, which would be regrettable.

Your solution is ask Taiwan accept the "one nation, two systems", which is accepted by 95% of Taiwanese.

Now the rockets Fans all over the world can see the militarism of some Chinese (not all of them, though...at least not Yao).

no more political debate.....if any Taiwanses fans see this post, I suggest that we just remain silence. Talking politics on this basketball forum will only irritate other fans. Let those bellicose chinese say what they want to say. They will learn their lessons afterward.

We want to maintain the territorial integrity of our land against foreign imperialist incursions. The Americans and Japanese have their hands all over this crap.

Now for Americans, imagine this scenario. The Communist party wins an election in Hawaii, and proceeds to change its institutions so that they are socialist/communist. It refuses to accept the orders of the gov't in Washington, and it repeatedly drops hints that it would like to declare independence as the People's Republic of Hawaii. It curries favor from and gains the de facto support of China and the USSR, both of which drop hints that if the US attacks Hawaii, then they will defend Hawaii. Now what would you Americans do?

To say Yao is being as a spy or any agent to infiltrate the Taiwanese is just ridiculous.

Furthermore, this thread is turning into a political debate that should not be in the game action and roster moves forum.

Everyone has their own damn opinions. I have friends that are Chinese mainlanders and Taiwanese---but they have one thing in common. They root for the Rockets and they ALL root for Yao Ming.

I wouldn't care. I would let the locals do what they wish. I wouldn't take it personally either.

Very well said dude. I may not agree to this completely. But you are classy and you sound open for discussion.

I am from Hong Kong and I regard Taiwan as part of China, more so culturally than politically. And I believe that the cultural sense of China doesn't and shouldn't be solely interpreted by the People's Republic of China.

People in PRC needs to be aware that keeping on empthasizing Taiwan is part of PRC would only generate more hatred and grievences in Taiwan against PRC. Meanwhile people in Taiwan needs to aware that in the century of globalization, they need to integrate with, not isolate from, their neigbouring countries, more so for PRC which is culturally and historically closest to Taiwan, like it or not.

Well, we had a civil war, thousands died, healed our wounds and moved forward.

No offense to you DaDakota, but that is a grave oversimplification of 20th century Chinese history. Remember at one point they were on the same side fighting common enemies and they were reeling from invasion in WWII before the split.

Gee, I wonder who is becoming the proxy here... America, as Taiwan's proxy, shields it from the the terrifying force that is China and guarantees its security. Taiwan, as America's proxy, gives the Americans an excuse to go to war with China if ever they finally view the Chinese as a threat that needs to be crushed militarily. These geo political maneuvaring makes Bold and the Beautiful look like a lame tear jerker... (wait... IT IS a lame tear jerker)...

That's messed up. It's not like he's trying to take over Taiwan. Even though he represents China, he's not the government.

Can you blame Taiwan? I mean, their leader is like 3 foot shorter than yao, how would it make him look if they meet?

But seriously, this is negative publicity for the island, to deny an International star to visit for charity reasons.

And for the record, Taiwan is not a country, it never has been, and never will be. I love it when Taiwanese come out and try to deny that. There're like 5 governments in the world, all third world countries, getting paid by the millions every year, that list Taiwan a "country". Wake me up to discuss again when Taiwan is in the United Nations.

Taiwan could be the only place in the world to deny Yao's vist. Wow!

He's referring to the American Civil War.

The Taiwanese rejected pandas too. I don't know, the pandas must have been some bona fide communist pandas.

    Circa 1700:

"Slaves aren't people. All major world powers and countries recognize slaves as property and people can be dealt with however they like by their owners."

Maybe the people who are being ruled should have some say in who they want as their government? And being Taiwanese I'm pretty sure the PRC ain't it.
