Hi Cotovelo, I thought Varejao wasn't going to play in Las Vegas. Brazil will have the best big men in the tournament after USA. Its a big chance for Brazil to qualify for the Olympics. With the Argentine team missing many of its offensive threats, Scola will probably have two or even three defenders on him many times. It will be interesting to see how he does to overcome this.
50% is efficient..but only 23 points from 22 attempts is NOT efficient...how is this even debatable..

The video is from a friendly match played a week ago in Buenos Aires. It was not against the best Canadian team, that is now playing in Puerto Rico (with Dalembert).
Any idea how many mid-range shots and low post scoring attempts Scola made in the game against Brazil?Did he manage to stay out of foul trouble?
They are not showing this tourny in Argentina, so I don't know about his shooting. But he stayed out of foul trouble. About his shooting, there is a shotchart in the live score of the tournament... but I don't think its reliable. According to it, the Argentine team only made two shots from inside the paint... and none of them was from Scola. but if you want to watch it: http://netcasting.mbt.lt/FIBA/pr/Netcasting//default.asp?game_number=1µsite_scope=undefined

He move really well without the ball, good passing, and a nice pick and roll game, a mid rage game, perfect for Adelman sys.
As with all things, context is very important in these matters. I do agree that in general, getting 23 points from 22 shots is not very efficient. However, this usually assumes a fair number of points scored from the FT line. That is, suppose a player goes 7-10 from the FT line and shoots 8-22 from the field. That's very average and nothing to be excited about. However, this situation implies that the player actually took an equivalent of 22+5(FT attempts/2)=27 shots. And only scored 23 points. Hence, why people tend to dismiss a player's points when he shoots roughly the same number of shots. However, in Scola's case, he went 1-2 from the FT line. Basically giving him an effective FG% of 50. I don't have any rankings in front of me. But just common sense should dictate that this can't be "inefficient".
We shouldn't project Scola's efficiency from one game. According to that Sports Illustrated article, Scola averaged 60% from the field last year....which is very efficient.
Who cares about how many points he got and fg%. They could of been dunks and layups. I'm not saying anything about Scola's play until preseason game number 1 because frankly, I think international ball is a lot different from the NBA.
Mikeylu doesn't understand the difference between posessions and shot attempts. Someone could score 23pts on no shot attempts but on 30 posessions (i.e. get points from FT line). Does that make this 23pts more efficent???? Absolutely not. I would take 23 pts from 22 attempts (i.e. 22 posessions) here.
I think Gasol is bigger, faster, more agile and more athletic than Scola. But Scola is a role player and Gasol is a franchise player so I I agree with Scola the two are not comparable
If you think basketball is all about scoring and just look at the number: 22 shots gets you 23 points....that's Juwan's performance. Difference is that Scola plays defense, draws double-team, is no.1 on his team, rebounds and moves without the ball....and most important, his team gets the win. That's efficient enough for me.
