You can't ever go wrong with a music thread. What are the "greatest" CDs that you own?? When I mean great, I'm talking about CDs that will stand the test of time. I have close to 400, so to do my list any justice, I'm going to list my top 25 with several honorable mention. I'm doing this many because I have so many good ones, but some people may only have a top 10 or even just a top 5. Anyway, here's my top 25: 1. OK Computer - Radiohead 2. Mezzanine - Massive Attack 3. Play - Moby 4. Karma - Delerium 5. Selected Ambient Works 85-92(import version) - Aphex Twin 6. The Bends - Radiohead 7. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins 8. Substance - New Order 9. Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins 10. Pet Sounds - Beach Boys 11. Leftism - Leftfield 12. boy, was this ever hard. . . this top 25 list does not include any records I bought within the past calendar year. I need time and perspective before I can really feel comfortable with including a record in a "best ever" list. I own over 600 cds so, needless to say, narrowing this down to 25 was a chore. I won't even get into honorable mention. there would be far too many. . . 1. simon & garfunkel -- old friends box set 2. ben harper -- fight for your mind 3. andrew lloyd webber -- jesus christ superstar 4. paul simon -- 1964-1993 box set 5. radiohead -- ok computer 6. sarah mclachlan -- fumbling toward ecstasy 7. old 97s -- too far to care 8. ben harper -- welcome to the cruel world 9. radiohead -- the bends 10. U2 -- achtung baby 11. counting crows -- recovering the satellites 12. living colour -- vivid 13. public enemy -- fear of a black planet 14. pearl jam -- vs. 15. fugees -- the score 16. living colour -- time’s up 17. alanis morrissette -- jagged little pill 18. weezer -- weezer 19. michael jackson -- thriller 20. lyle lovett -- I love everybody 21. duran duran -- seven and the ragged tiger 22. pearl jam -- ten 23. sly & the family stone -- anthology 24. run dmc -- tougher than leather 25. vernon reid -- mistaken identity
Chievous, I have 5 of your 25.....4 are already in my list and I also have Thriller. It's interesting that there weren't more, but it goes to show how many great CDs have been done over time. I got to thinking about this after I started this thread: some of you are probably saying, "we just did something like this with the Drewdog thread, 'Quinessential CDs'" That's true but with someone like me and like Chievous and I suspect others, there are more than 1 "quinessential" CD in your collection. Having a top 25 or top 10 gets all the best in there (and sometimes 25 is not enough). So, this thread is for more than that 1 quinessential CD...it's for those 10 or 25 quinessential CDs. Also, I should have mentioned that any CDs that are posted in the thread, feel free to comment on that CD especially if that particular CD is an essential one in your collection.

Oh, God, this is so hard it's silly...I wasn't sure whether to go with "favorites" or an empirical listing. Oh, well, here's a shot at some type of top 25 - I like them all. That's the only thread holding them together. 1. Beatles - Abbey Road 2. Marvin Gaye - What's Goin' On (could easily be my #1) 3. Led Zepplin - Houses of the Holy 4. Beatles - Sgt. Sweet mother of all that is good and pure, y'all have 400, 600, and 4000 CD's!!!!!!! How the hell can you buy so many. I've got like 20 and I barely get around to listening to them as it is. 400, much less 4000 (plz tell me you're kidding) is beyond comprehension. So I'll just list the 5 I like most, if greatest hits CD's count. 1. Immaculate Collection - Madonna (nothing else is even close) 2t. CCR - Chronicle: 20 Greatest Hits 2t. Come on Over - Shania Twain 4t. Oops I Did It Again - Britney Spears 4t. Fly - Dixie Chicks 6. Dare to be Stupid - Weird Al Yankovic ok so I listed 6

Well try. Much, much harder. Hell where do 4000 CD's even go. I guess I'm just much more of a radio/mp3 listener so I never get around to the CD's much.
Like CL4P, I'm not kidding either. Probably 8 years ago, I had maybe 5 to 10 CDs total. Now, I'm buying an average of 12 CDs every 2 weeks! I know that this has to stop, but I can't bring myself to do it. I need to get back to buying CDs once a month, but I always discover or find things that I want to buy. Believe me, I was at your point at one time. Being in college, you probably can't afford to spend that much money on CDs; however, once you get out of college and work full-time, it will be easier to spend the money on this...if you want to. BTW - I have in my collection your choices of #2, #3, and #4.
manny: I own 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 22, 23 and 24 from your list. in order to arrive at my list, I had to use the old "if I could only keep 1 of these 2 cds, which one would I keep?" method. it took a while. I'm pretty sure that, if I'd wanted to take more time, my list would probably change at least a little. I'm not suggesting that my 25 are the "greatest" 25 cds ever made, by any stretch. my list is more reflective of the 25 most influential records in my life. if I was to try to come up with my ballot for 25 most influential records of all-time, that would be much, much harder, and the list would be quite different. here are the discs from others' lists that barely missed my list or would have been on my honorable mentions-- manny: moby -- play radiohead -- kid A rm95: U2 -- joshua tree chris isaak -- forever blue ben harper -- the will to live lyle lovett -- the road to ensenada jeff: stevie wonder -- musiquarium
Geez, you could put most of these in random order. If I would normally include more than one album by an artist, I just picked the #1. Otherwise, you'd see way too many Bob Dylan's, Neil Young's, and Van Morrisson's on this list: 1. Astral Weeks - Van Morrisson 2. The Best of Bob Dylan(Yeah, cheating, so what; I can't pick a favorite album) - Bob Dylan 3. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere - Neil Young 4. Things Fall Apart - The Roots 5. Reflection Eternal - Talib Kwelli 6. Midnight Maurauders - Tribe Called Quest 7. Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins 8. The Wanderer - Oar of a Revolution 9. Useful Music - Josh Joplin 10. Hey. These lists are damn good. I can pretty much cut and paste everyone else's lists to make my own (with a few personal touches, of course).
