of course, jeff davis is one of the oldest schools in houston, I've always thought maybe davis's name should be changed because its been a school for minorities for at least 30 years now.

    It was just a thought.

Well, that argument is too tricky, when you have all sorts of named buildings, bridges, airports, and libraries that could have more inspiring namesakes.

What if you just change a few key letters? It's not like those of us from the south can ever spell anyway.

    Jefersohn Davies High
    or
    Roberty Leigh High

Then when everyone went a-googlin' they wouldn't be offended, but the locals could still retain at least the sound of their heritage.

And hey, is anything named after the infamous WT Sherman? There's an interesting figure for ya.

One thing I find interesting about this question, besides the black students having Robert E. Lee or Jefferson Davis on their diplomas, is the implication it might have on the organizational culture. The principals, the teachers, the janitors, etc, all have to say they work for "Jefferson Davis High School" or what-have-you (unless they're ashamed perhaps, and say HISD). If you find the name offensive, what does that do to your morale? Do they develop some rationalization for their association with Jeff Davis? If I were the principal there, I'd want to have some kind of statement to justify to the public why the school bears its name. I think you can change the baggage of the name (if you're going to keep it) by defining what you mean by it.

Not in the case of Jeff Davis High School, in Houston. It was built in 1926. My father was a senior while Mom was a sophomore, with both attending during the Depression. Must not have been too depressing, since they got married when Dad enlisted, after Pearl Harbor.

    Is this a 140 yrs ago-get-over-it-thing?

the ramifications of slave reach into the lives over everyone in this nation today
to deny that . . would be to deny the reality of American society

badly worded poll...I don't think they should, but if they are already named them, don't change them. There are plenty of people to name new schools after though

Actually it is just a large part of the subtle nature of racism and propaganda
It schools across the country popped up being David Duke high
it would not affect most people. . . but one or two
who may teach one or two
    so on and so forth

Comparing someone like Hitler with Robert E. Lee (or even Jeff Davis) isn't appropriate.

Also - i think it is extremely simplistic to brand all Confederates "traitors". This was not some coup planned by a small group of wealthy slave owners. "Half" of the country - including a good 30-40 percent of all congressman, military officers, enlisted men, etc. became Confederates.

I'm black, but growing up in the South and hearing Dixie everytime one of the tribe scored one at Stallworth Stadium, I have no problem with it. Lots of Southerners died defending their "homeland," and a pretty small percentage of them had slaves. Now, arrogant, stubborn stuff like permanently putting the Battle Flag on top of a state Capitol building, in states that are like, 30-40% black (and slave-descended), I'm glad states have stopped doing that (I believe).

Also, I'm pretty sure there's a decent chunk of schools in the North named after Malcolm X. If he and his ilk can be forgiven for calling 3/4 of the country "devils," than Mr. Lee probably can as well. And maybe he gets a little slack cause of his dad and uncle.

Try not to b**** too hard about Tuskegee Airmen month or Mid-January Monday Off, though.

I am sooo naming my first kid Robberty.

Jeff, Bobby, Stonewall and Alexander Stephens wrote the check, Tecumseh simply cashed it. And he tried to warn 'em beforehand...

I wonder how a black kid feels about going to a school named Robert E. Lee?

Of course, with our education system, most kids probably don't even know who he is.

Maybe we should fix that and all this other stuff would be resolved.

That's a good point. My nephew had 6 of his friends over when he was down here last month and I asked them who the combatants were in the American Civil War. Nobody knew. I asked them who the combatants were in the two world wars. One person said the U.S. but when I asked who they fought he said Canada.

Do you realize that our history books, thirty years from now, will probably have entries on Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, O.J. Simpson, Survivor, Don Imus and Anna Nicole Smith? You really think entry-level salaried teachers are gonna even attempt to discuss Mother Theresa, Perestroika, NAFTA or Slobodan Milosevic with a bunch of text messaging, online gaming teenagers? Didn't some network new producer get fired for interrupting CSI to announce Yasser Arafat's death?
