I am currently catching up on The Wire and I am completely addicted. As much as I love The Sopranos, there is so much depth to this show that nothing even comes close. What I find funny is that just about every character in The Wire is sympathetic at some level, or at least has their reasons why they conduct their lives as they do. The Sopranos treats every character as being compromised and corrupted. It's an interesting contrast in the two world views. David Simon, the creator of The Wire, was a reporter in Baltimore and he wrote two books based on his time on both sides of the law, "Homicide" and "The Corner." Has anybody seen the shows that came out of these books?
Newer: Arrested Development Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job Saul of the Mole Men Reno 911 Older: Upright Citizen's Brigade Mr. Show with Bob and David Strip Mall
I love Batman the Animated Series. Another great DC animated series is Justice League Unlimited seasons 1 and 2 (which is actually Justice League seasons 3 and 4). One of my favorite TV series: Babylon 5
Great recommendations so far, since the start of this thread i have watched the first 2 eps of Scrubs and Entourage. Scrubs reminds me of Arrested Development in a way, will continue watching. Entourage is exactly what i expected from an HBO series so far, and thats a good thing. Will definitely continue viewing this series. A friend let me use his arrested development season 1 disk and its been collecting dust since i had it, i liked it at the time but just forgot about it, all I remember is Tobias' crazy antics. From the responses it seems like Deadwood, Rome, Weeds, and Carnivale is something I will check out. Thanks everyone
Just so you know, Carnivale was cancelled after season 2 because it was too expensive to make, and it ended on a huge cliffhanger. Even still, I would recommend it.
[rant]How do you watch this crap? I don't get what people see in them and why Adult Swim continues to show them. It's not funny. Just stupid for the sake of being stupid.[/rant] Had to get that out because I really don't understand the draw.
cannot recommend The Shield enough. can't imagine how huge that show would have been if it started out on HBO rather than FX.
I tried watching smallville but the dialog is so irritating. Literally every sentence that come out of their mouths are sarcastic metaphors/slangs. i.e. instead of saying "clark just left" like normal people, you get something like "you don't know about clark's famous disappearing acts?" EVERY damn sentence. What kind of world do those writers live in?
Arrested Development. Arrested Development. Arrested Development. You have to watch in order, not just random episodes here or there. It works like a serial show (Lost, 24), but in comedy style. A lot of the nuance of the comedy works if you've seen previous episodes. The second season is a level of comedy unsurpassed in the modern world.
I've lived in or around Baltimore for about the last 10 years and I've read both books and seen most of the Homicide series. Homicide did an excellent job of capturing the quirky/gritty flavor of Baltimore. I only recently got HBO so I haven't seen much of The Wire.
Hard to believe that the guy playing the dealer in Go is the same actor playing the sheriff in Deadwood. That guy can really act.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Six Feet Under. Great great show. Damn I miss it. Also, another vote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Maybe the best television show of all time.
One of my top five favorites right now. Surprisingly enough, his best delivered line was actually in some crappy Freddie Prinze, Jr. movie that I can't even remember the name of right now. Basically, his girlfriend (the lead actress in the movie) walks in on him being ridden by another girl. When he sees her he says, "oooooooh ****". I think that was his only line in the movie. He's the lead in Hitman coming out this fall and played the villain in Live Free or Die Hard. But Seth Bullock is by far his best role. I miss that show terribly.
