It's not a fair choice so I refuse to vote. I disagree that one delivered and the other didn't. They have very different context. One spoke BEFORE something would happened. The other spoke AFTER something had happened. Big difference. Don't forget that the reason why Bum's statement had such an emotional impact was because Houston at that time had NEVER won any major national championship. It was Choke City before Choke City was invented. And the perception at that time was that if ONLY we could beat the evil Steelers, we would be able to go all the way. That's why Bum was such an icon among Houston sports fans.
I suspect that many of the votes causing this landslide win for rudy is due to youth on the board. With all of us gissors pleading our case, son if you lived through luv ya blue, you would understand. Imagine an ol' redneck-take-no-$hit cowboy-hat-wearing coach, walking up to the mic in front of a sold out astrodome crowd and many more glued to the television and then after all that happened with the refs being against you, the cheating steelers and all the rest: then comes those faithful words - Lst Yr we kncked on the door. Ths yr we banged on the door. Nxt yr we’re gonna kick that sumbitch in. Unreal!
Bum coached at my high school. As much as I love Rudy, Bum connects with me a little better. Besides, as great as Rudy's quote was, it was delivered after the fact. If he had given it when Maxwell quit on the team and the Rockets didn't look so great, it would have been even more meaningful.
I disagree. I lived through Luv Ya Blue. The Steelers kept eating our lunch year after year. To me, a public-promise-of-winning loses meaning and value if they don't deliver. Rudy's was awesome 'cause the Rockets have always been (and still are) the underdogs. His statement was a slap to those who worship the Lakers and Knicks and don't give respect to the other teams in the NBA.
If the refs hadn't totally blown the call on Mike Renfro in 1979, the AFC Championship was ours for the taking. And that was with injuries to some key players. Bum was no bum, and he wasn't talking out of his hat.
I really don't see how you REALLY lived through luv ya blue and have that perspective. It wasn't just a public promise, it was the whole city of houston coming together in one sound to say we don't give a $hit who stands in our way. We have a chip on our shoulder and we are going to overcome the whole freaking nfl if we have too. Don't diss bum Phillips. You can talk all you want about rudy and the rockets, luv ya blue was bigger than those two championships, always was and always will be. Only people that care about championships and nothing else would pick the rockets. Luv ya blue was in your veins, babbby.
True, but it doesn't sound as cool if you can't put the emphasis on the second word: "Don't EVER underestimate the heart of a champion"
It's really an easy choice for me because I only have a vague recollection of who Bum Philips is. He was a coach for the Oilers, right? Yeah. Again, easy choice. I could care less about any sport that isn't basketball or, for that matter, anything said in those other sports. So far as I'm concerned, they don't count. p.s. I question the validity of any sport in which a large portion of it's "athletes" are fat.
I would never say that! Like I said, I love them both. Great memories that'll stay with me forever. Won't vote in this poll.
And people who could care less about football. I lived through it. I didn't care a lick about it though. I know that the fact I don't even count football as a real sport puts me in a position of extreme bias, but it seems completely insane to me that you can think luv ya blue was more important than the Rockets two championships now that the Oilers have long since abandoned Houston. Not that I think the fact they're long gone negates the experience, but doesn't it at least subtract a few points from their total when adding them up against the Rockets?
I wasn't exactly born for the luv ya blue days. but that line kicked ass. Atleast we got Mario Williams knocking down the door.
