So with the KG trade, I'm wondering how many people out there think we'll see a rematch of the 1986 NBA Finals, only with an infinitely less talented Boston and an infinitely less talented Houston (dude, that '86 team was GOOD). Poll is coming soon...
My two cents: I think the Celtics are good enough to take the East with KG coming along. After all, if the Cavs got there will a bunch of nobodies and Lebron, I think the Celtics can do it with KG, Allen, and Paul Pierce (who I believe to be a bit overrated). Still, I think they can make it. But can the Rockets? We have one hell of an uphill climb. The team has to learn a new offensive system and incorporate a ton of new players. T-Mac and Yao have to avoid injury. Either Franchise or Bonzi needs to pick it up and become a legitimate third scorer for this team to succeed. On paper, it looks like we can. But can we? I'm cautiously optimistic at this point; I'd rather have to climb Chicago-Washington-Miami-Cleveland over Phoenix-San Antonio-Dallas-LA any day. But if we met up? Rockets in 6.
you realize if this happens, the ratings would be through the ROOF!! no more crappy Spurs ratings. I bet if Eva didn't show up, the ratings for the Spurs would go down even further!
lol Barring both Scola and Brooks breaking out I don't see us getting out of the conference finals. Getting that far would surprise me.
i have no question the rockets are a superior team to the celtics but their road to the finals is about 10 times easier. that would be a fun finals though.
the Celtics have like...a 500% better chance to get to the finals..who is their competition? the aging pistons? the Cleveland Lebrons? superstar rashard? jkidd and his injury squad? the young raptors? I see nothing in their way. who is our competition? everyone except memphis, seattle, and minnesota could probably bust out a team.
If the Rockets and Celtics should meet in the NBA Finals, it would be the third time they meet since the Rockets were moved to the Western Conference back in 1981. Speaking of 1981, it is the only other year those teams met in the finals in addition to 1986. Also, one other thing to keep in mind is that two of the three NBA Championships the Celtics captured in the 1980's were against the Rockets with their other one against the Lakers (1984). Lets hope that if the 2007-08 NBA Championship comes down to the Rockets and Celtics, things will be different.
I dont think that the celtics can make it to the playoffs with the depth on their team. now after the trade they lost all of their depth. you cant go far in the playoffs with out no depth.
While part of me is giddy with anticipation of the possibility of a rematch of the 86 Championship, the Rockets path to the championship is filled with trials and tribulations that are not matched by the Celtics. Furthermore, even the Celtics have a difficult task, because they may get in a situation like last year's Pistons, who could not stop a Lebron James level of player. Still, gutsy moves by Ainge and a nice, final assist by McHale. It gives us Rockets fans some hope that we'll be able to avenge one of those banners that were won on us.
I think the Celtics have an easier road to the Finals than the Rockets. Who are the contenders in the East? The Cavs and the Pistons? Not Miami. They got swept in Round 1 last year and won't be any better this season. Chicago still needs a post player. They were stupid to not get Garnett. As for the Rockets, they have to contend with the Spurs, Suns, and Mavs. I think we're better than the Jazz now with the moves we've made. Fortunately it's an even-numbered year, so the Spurs likely won't win a title. And of course Phoenix is a Steve Nash injury away from being a lottery team. The Mavs....who the hell knows with them? But it's still a much more difficult task getting out of the West.
i hope you mityped there. celts are def a top 4 team in the east if not the best heck we went to the wcf with an older dream, glide, and sir charles with no bench either.
I did. I'm cautiously optimistic -- while I definitely think the Rockets can make it out of the first round (and possibly to the WCF), I'm not ready to say yet that a team with a ton of new players coming into a new system with a new coach is ready to get to the Finals. And I still worry about Yao's toe and T-Mac's back; I'm not ready to claim they're just fine (hell, I even knocked on wood when writing this sentence). This team has so many personal hurdles to clear this year; I'm not going to say that they're automatically going to clear all the external hurdles. But the Celtics? They're in the JV League. I think a Rockets second unit (Brooke/Franchise/Bonzi/Hayes/Deke) could make the playoffs in the East. So why couldn't KG/Allen/Pierce?
I did, because to make it to the finals we have to go through the likes of: San Antonio, Phoenix, Dallas, Utah, Denver, and whoever else rises up from the West this year. All five of those teams I just named I could honestly see winning the championship next year and if we include the Roxs thats six teams that I consider to be "REAL CONTENDERS" in the West. IMO if the Roxs make it out of the first round next year I will be happy. Of course I want them to win it all, but I do understand that they have a real test in the West and it make take some time for the team to gel and mesh. In the East there is only one dominant team there and thats the Pistons, that you know for sure are probably going to be one of the last teams standing there. Not even that sure if Miami, Chicago, Cleveland, or even Orlando will be in the mix next year. Because in the East you just never know who is going to be left standing.
