C'mon now, how many Germans are on this board? English title, 'The Lives of Others'. I was contemplating about downloading it, but I guess I'll go ahead and do it since you recommended.
I heard first hand from someone in the Stasi some examples of exactly how insane they were. Combine the paranoia that the Soviets gave the GDR with the existing German efficency and thoroughness and you have really, really absurd stuff. Die Leute aus die Stasi sehr verrückt wurden.
I loved the movie. Writers/Authors/Artists were extremely influential in the GDR, whose citizens were some pf the most 'literate' in the world. Here's an interesting article on the topic: http://www.acdis.uiuc.edu/Research/S&Ps/1992-Sp-Su/S&P_VI-3-4/east_germany.html
absolutely amazing film...would also recommend to others here looks like hollywood's making its own version in 2010. meanwhile, this one's #74 om imdb's top 250 of all time. good rec, tiger. thanks!
Well msot dutch can also speak and read deutch, so that increases the people who can read his title by..... 1 (two if you count Ace, not sure if he can read deatch). I haven't seen the movie. I like the movie Das experiment, I didn't really like Der untergang.
I only know of three Germans on the board: jovi, GermanRoxFan (or something like that) and me. "Großartiger film! Empfohlen" -> correct! "der vatterland" -> Das Vaterland "Die Leute aus die Stasi sehr verrückt wurden" -> Die Leute aus der Stasi waren sehr verrückt. I actually haven't seen the movie, but it's a bit sad because one of the main actors, Ulrich Muehe, just died of cancer. Apparently he got to know of his cancer on the night he got the Oscar or very close to it, so triumph and tragedy happened to coincide there. I'll get the movie on DVD at some point, or watch it when it will be on TV.
