What is the best place for Baja-Mex, or "true" mexican food?

Trying to find out where would be the best place to find these. Sorry, but this girl doesn't like Tex-Mex. I told this girl from "San Diego" that I'd find the best place in town for her kind of mexican food, if she would try my favorite restaurant.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Otilia's- off of I-10 and Wirt. I go there all the time and it's excellent. Used to be a "hole in the wall" kind of place but has grown.

Hugo's on Westheimer, close to Montrose- Pricier, fancier, and very good. Probably better for a date.

These are REAL Mexican, not like Pappasito's or Cafe Adobe.

Yucatan is better than Baja. I don't know any Baja style restaurants in Houston. Pico's (Mex-Mex) is pretty good for Yucatan and I think better overall than Hugo's. Tikin Xic (or conchinita pibil for pork), multiple moles, etc.

This sounds less like a girl who wants "true" mexican food as one who wants to see you try to impress her.

Just spent two hours on the phone with her. We'll see...

I'm not surprised no "baja-mex" is showing up here. Texans created Tex-Mex. Live with it!

Take her to a taco stand on Long Point. She'll think she's in Mexico.

100% Taquito on Weslayan/59N is a fantastic authentic mexican place. Don't let the name put you off...the food is amazing and the place is authentic (no tex-mex)

Not mexican, but if you're looking for spanish Riojas, off of kirkwood and westheimer. great spanish food.

As for true mexican food....what?? I thought texmex was created by mexicans in texas or i might be mistaken.

I will second this, Rioja is VERY good for tapas. I live about 2 mins from it so I've been hitting it up a lot.

I'll tell you where not to go and that is La Mexicana. I went there for lunch the other day and thought it was awful.

El Tiempo is my favorite, but it's still somewhat tex-mex.

La Mexicana is disgusting. El Tiempo is tex-mex, but it is great

Another decent authentic Mexican food place is Taqueria La Tapatia, but I would still go with 100% Taquito over that place.

Take her to a Taco Bus. They are easy to find all over the city.
