just wondering whats a decent pistol for home defense? this is for a female and the shot gun is out of the question due to size and ease of placement. under $800.

    1. Take a gun safety course.
    2. Take a concealed hand gun license course (just for the instruction, you don't actually need it for home defense)
    3. .40 cal H&K

My wife has trouble shooting anything larger than .38special. As a basis I would look at a nice .38SP revolver which would be easy to maintain and clean.

I would suggest something in stainless steel instead of matte black, because part of the point of branshishing a gun is for the invader to see that you have it.

Something like this would be what I am talking about. (.357 is an over-powered .38 cartridge. You can use .38 in .357, but not vice versa.)

It can be found for under $400.

    Edit:

I just checked my catalog and my wholesale/dealer price is $317.10. Include shipping and I can get one under $350.

she will need to practice if she will actually want to hit anything with the pistol...especially given that it would be a paniced state. Hence the shotgun is always the best, given that a shotty is out of the question...you will have a lot of choices for 800 and under, especially if you search around.

not sure how his prices are but he's been around for a while

9 Mil should be great for a woman. Fun as heck to shoot and doesnt pack a kick. Almost no kick compared to 40 or 45s.

A good place to get guns is the Gun Show you can get a good one easily under $800.00.

    HK 9 mil

I recently purchased a HK p2000 for a good price. I can hook you up with the retailer if your interested. I did some research prior to purchasing and I believe this is the best price you can find brand new HK's in town.

Try looking at the KAHR 9mm... small compact size. Got it around 500dls, a lil over a year ago. Easy to conceal!

There is a gun show this weekend in Pasadena.

You can get a really good gun for half of $800.

A springfield xd 9mm is a great gun for a lady. My girlfriend shot that on her qualifying for her concealed handgun license and she liked it.

All this gun talk. May I suggest a big dog?

Plus its kinda hard to play catch with a 9mm.

But has a 9mm ever taken a crap on the couch?

One other thing I would suggest:

At least here in Houston, the gun ranges have guns that you can rent. Take her to the range and have her try out several different styles and calibers and see what feels best to her.

What if you just got a really small shotgun, like this:
That way you have the advantages of a shotgun (easy to hit your target under poor conditions, good stopping power against unarmored targets, low risk of over penetration - especially while using shot) but you can have a reasonably small weapon (not pistol small, but much smaller than a full size shotgun or rifle).

just get a weak caliber small pistol, add a laser pointer and bayonet on it. if you shoot someone once usually they are gonna gtfo unless theyre jacked on roids like duke nukem..and if they charge you..civil war bayonet their ass.
