There have been some freak accidents in the past. I know it's happened a couple of times where a batter was hit by a pitch in the chest in exactly the right spot at exactly the right time which caused the heart to just stop.

    RIP

You see batters take nasty pitches to the head and pitchers get knocked out by liners (Wagner) occasionally. But you never see/hear about it from someone 90 feet away.

It could have been Orlando Merced. Merced was the Drillers first base coach until he resigned/retired in early July. The story is very sad because Coolbaugh hadn't been on job for a month....2 young sons...pregnant wife. Wife says he went back to baseball cause the kids liked seeing him in a uniform. What effect it will have on Tino Sanchez, the batter, remains to been seen.

    RIP.

You would think it would be easy, cheap and smart to put the first and third base coaches in batters helmets.

I followed him while at AAA. I thought he'd make it up at some point. Unfortunate news.

Funny thing is, had this been a home game, he would have gone to the hospital across the street from where I live.
