Rockets can match any offer he gets- like right of first refusal-right?

Comment from Feigen's blog, July 20:

"The Rockets made [Chuck] an offer with a large portion incentive-based. They are waiting on an answer. He is a restricted free agent so they can match any offer he is likely to get. It usually takes much longer with restricted free agents. Dikembe also has an offer, but it is likely much less than David Falk sought. He'll have to decide what he wants to do."

Sounds like the Rockets are content to low-ball Chuck and match if anyone makes him an offer.

Oh ok, I wasn't aware of that at the time. Thanks for pointing it out.

Hayes would be wise to accept our offer since there aren't many teams out there where a player of his mold could actually contribute. That's no knock against Chuck either, it's just he's only going to fit in where he compliments another strong interior scorer like Yao -- and truth be told, there aren't many Yao's out there.

Where did he mention Deke being unhappy with the offer? I must have missed it. Thanks for a link if you can find one.

I hope we can have both back. We are going to need Hayes and Deke's toughness coming off of the bench and I'm not sure that Tsakalidis is ready to be Yao's main backup.

Lowballing is offering $2.4 million to a player that others would pay the MLE for . It's not lowballing, if he isn't worth more than that. :)

Another update on Deke on the same Fegen blog entry mentioned above.

The Rockets made an offer. They are waiting for his decision. But Dikembe is pretty involved in saving the world this time of year. A decision could come today or a month from now. At this point, he is entitled to his own timetable. -- Jonathan

I love Chuck as much as the next guy but dude what are you smoking? Hook me up with some of that ish.

Chuck is terrific at taking charges, hustling, rebounding and moving his feet but a premiert post defender? haha

He can't block or even challenge a taller power forward. How is he a premier post defender?

That is all still post defense, does not mean strickly one on one defense and even that regard Hayes is a very very smart defender. He uses his quick hands and feet to either swipe the ball away or at least beat his man to the spot. Even if he doesnt draw a charge or be able to effectively contest a shot he does make the offensive player go out of their "comfort zone" because he is a lot stronger than he looks. his rotations are quick and correct whenever there is a switch or if a person went past rafer. chuck's hustle alone probably saved the rockets several possessions over the course of the year and dont forget his game sealing charge against fisher.

has there been a game this past season where an opposing PF scored on chuck repeatedly in a row? boozer in the playoffs did most if not all his damage against Yao not chuck. I really cant think of any game where an avg PF tore him up (corliss had his season high against juwan in that game in sacto) granted the duncans,kg,amare's will get theirs regardless but i mean they do that against anyone thats why their all-star/world players. He may lack the blocks which sadly a lot of people equate to defense but chuck excels in every other aspect of defense there is.

Granted most of what you say makes sense. But is Chuck a PREMIER post defender? That's the only point I was arguing.

I like Chuck as much as the next guy, but let's be honest here. How many teams in the league would the Chuck Wagon actually start for, probably NONE, that shows you how weak we are up front!

Isaiah Thomas offered Hayes 6 years $45 million.

Not to be outdone, Steinbrenner offered him 53 years $1.6 x 10^7 billion dollars.
(that's the biggest number I could think of...)

To echo what some other poster said here not to long ago, if you dislike Chuck Hayes and want him off the team that basically indicates a serious character flaw on your part.

I don't think its possible to be a good person and dislike Chuck Hayes.

Why did the Rockets not go after Bass?

He's Chuck (short), but with more athleticism and upside.

He's also got a 7'2 wingspan AND knows how to use it.

deke is the one i would rather offer a contract to. let hayes test the waters, doubt anyone would make an offer we cant match.

durvasa is right. chuck hayes is the window to the soul.

I like Chuck, he is a good backup for the price, as long as we are signing him under $3 Million, preferbably under $2.5 Million, then I am ok..
