I'm thinking Morey is putting Hayes on 'hold' right now to see if he can trade some of our many guards for a good PF. If he can't, he'll probably end up signing Chuck Hayes.

Your thoughts? Why hasn't Hayes been signed yet

I love Chuck and Deke but I wouldn't be surprised neither of them get signed. But if there is only 1 spot left on the roster, who gets it? Chuck or Deke? Hmmmm.....

Chuck is great coming off the bench, if nothing happens he will be resigned. I'd also like to se Deke back for one more season because he proved last season that he is still capable of producing.

Keep Hayes. Everyone wants a rebounder and defender at the 4. Hayes is not anything if not that. People say "so and so is Hayes with better offense" or "so and so is Hayes plus 3 inches". I don't buy it. Chuck Hayes is not a decent defender. He's a premier post defender. His rebounds per minute is one of the best in the league. He was a member of the most effective 5-man unit in basketball last year. We should appreciate what we got. Besides, is Udonis Haslem going to be happy splitting time with Luis Scola? I think Chuck will be a better chemistry guy and a better change of pace guy, giving what Scola can't give.

    Keep Chuck!!

Man, Morey better get on the ball before we lose Chuck. I bet there's a huge market out there for undersized, foul prone, PFs with no scoring ability whatsoever.

Is it possible that they are waiting for a sign and trade that may invole Chuck?

He's a restricted free agent, so the ball's in Chuck's court, not Morey's.

chuck and the rockets both know that they can reach an agreement. so why waste time signing him now when there are moves to be made.

i would hate to see that we've just signed hayes, and the same day miami finds a PG.

priorities. find a trade for rafer while teams still have a need for him.

Well, not unless we make him an offer which to this point we apparently haven't done yet.

I've been thinking about this question myself and I will say that I agree with the original poster. With all the Haslem talks and what not, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Moneyball was making Chuck our insurance plan at PF.

I dont think Chucks going anywhere. for those thinking Haslem is a possibility, wakeup and smell the coffe. Alston and head for Haslem is laughebal. Riley would wet he's pants after having such a hard laugh. hayes and scola will be our Powerforward rotation with either of novak or landry as our insurance policy...

Morey's sent Hayes & Deke contracts. It's up to them if they sign or not. In Feigen's blog he mentioned Deke being unhappy with his offer.

    Luxury tax threshold: 67.865M

17 players not including Landry, Hayes, Deke: c. 70.952M (real figure might be a couple million more)

If cutting Mike Harris's $427,163, $50K is guaranteed (from Feigen article)
Landry's contract will be for the rookie min $427,163 if he signs

Paying Sura his $1M then getting the league to approve a medical retirement to get that $1M off the books might be enough to get them under. However they still need to add true backups at the 4 and 5 be it Hayes and Deke or others.

If they could dump Alston for nothing that's the room they need to sign those backups but I'm thinking no one wants his contract. We'll know soon enough if Alston has negative trade value.

The only guys with dead straight figures are the ones either on rookie contracts or min salaries since they're published online by the league and players association.

I used the figures from these sites:
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/salaries/index.html
    http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries.htm
I got an estimate of James's salary from this article:

I think we're gonna lose Lucas for nothing, cut Sura, and not re-sign Deke.

That should put us enough under the cap. I can also see us getting rid of Reed for nothing.

I'm sure there are teams that would love to have Hayes as a solid backup at the 4
