I haven't been inside a K-Mart in years, but I stopped at a road side stand and had a couple of burritoes for lunch today. Sad to say, our plunger must have been leeft at the old apartment so I went to the Kmart down the street on Parmer and Mopac. I go get my plunger and see an open checkout counter. There isn't a cashier....Its self service. Swiped the plunger. swiped the debit card. typed in PIN #. Receipt popped out, and I was gone.

Quick. It should lower Kmarts prices as they will need less cashiers! I don't know about the quality of the rest of their stuff, but for all your plunger needs, I reccommend KMArt self service!

Joe Joe, I live in that neighborhood and have been to that exact K-Mart. Believe me, they're definitely improving their customer service by removing employees from the equation. The ones I ever came in to contact with the times I've been there were surly, indifferent mumblers.

I think they have like one person walking back and fourth monitering it.

Plus if they set up video cameras and saw someone not swiping all of the stuff they could look at the time and match it to the credit card and get the name. Or even cooler would be to put on an additional charge for those items plus a fee.

If you try to take a non-swiped, non-paid for item out of the store, an alarm will sound.

    That's my guess, anyway.

KMart has snipers posted on the roof of the surrounding stores. You try to take so much as a Tic-Tac out of the store without paying for it, they shoot you dead.

Then, the KMart S.W.A.T. team tracks down and kills your entire family.

    They take shoplifting seriously.

On each checkout stand there's a camera staring you right in the face, and a booth in the aisle manned by some Joe Schmoe with an interface panel to correct any errors.

    HEIGHTENED security!

Dang … part of the pleasure of shopping at Walmart or K-Mart or all those other “supermarts” is that you now ....

    - have time to relax after the exhausting drive through construction hampered "rush hour at any hour" traffic,

    - have time to wind-sprint the two mile long parking lot while dodging Pintos and Suburbans driven by blind parapalegic cretins,

    - and time to get all that stress pumped back up for the drive back home, by the thoroughly engaging fury of an under-paid, disgruntled, and slow-moving cashier.

Damn Them!!!!! Those new fandangled checkout contraptions are ruining my life!!!!!!!!!!!

K-Mart has been getting much better.

When Sam Walton was personnally overseeing the operations of Wal-Mart, they were great. After he stepped down due to health / personal reasons, Wal-Mart changed. After he died, the company really went to pot.

Does anyone remember the days when Wal-Mart didn't run out of anything? They focused on personal customer service, and demanded their employees give it? Every manager was forced to go through a long mentorship period, where they worked every position? Isles were kept wide and clear? Check-out lines were speedy, with enough staff? They demanded quality products from their suppliers. The stores were clean.

Wal-Mart steamrolled over K-Mart, Target, and every other chain, to gain their present position -- because they held solid customer service ideals. They tried to be different -- better -- in every aspect, than their competition. K-Mart stores were known for being crappy, cheap, dirty, with poor service.

IMHO K-Mart and Target seem to be turning to many of Sam Walton's principles that made Wal-Mart so successful. I hope they do it. K-Mart and Target stores are now much nicer than Wal-Mart.
