there was this guy on the national network on 610 sunday night. he was saying that the refs in the nba ought to run into each other, and knock each other out, then someone on the opposing team pull out brass knuckles, and knock a home team player out and get the ball and as soon as he dribbles to the goal to score the refs wake up and award him two points and the game.

    just like in wrestling.

seriously, I think most people who make a big deal about this as far as the whole league is concerned, were just looking for a reason to stop watching the nba.

tanking goes on in the nba and nfl all the time and no one complains. seriously, what's worse.

True, true, if you've seen Dream, Magic, Jordan or Shaq in their prime this is evident. When their stars align you couldn't stop 'em.

If I had a good way to poll casual fans, I would have done that too. They don't seem to congregate anywhere in particular though. I wonder about the difference zealotry will make though. On the one hand, it is much easier for the casual fan to walk away. On the other, the scandal represents a much greater betrayal to the hardcore fan, so I see potential for more hardline reactions.

We all assumed the refs were on the take anyway, right?? :p

Seriously, I can't imagine this is the first incident where a ref or player has been on the take. Am I a big conspiracy theorist who every outcome is pre-determined? No. Do I believe a few number of games have been effected because of "outside interests". Absolutely.

I rarely go to games, but I love watching. This won't affect my love for the league or the game in any way. If there gets to be a pattern of it in the future though... hmm... lol.

I'd be super pissed if I was either a Suns fan or a Spurs fan (because this kind of taints their most recent championship) but as a Rockets fan, it hasn't affected me and I don't care about one ref with a gambling addiction. Just like I wouldn't have stopped watching basketball if Kobe got convicted of rape.

I think you are asking the wrong crowd. Most people here are die hard Rockets fans. They'll watch no matter what.

But if you ask the fair weather fans, the casual fans, those who only watch the NBA Finals and think they are the two best teams ;) , those are the people who might be affected by the image.

I don't think anyone here would ever let one gambling addict change their perception of the game. However it were Mr Commissioner Stern...

Yeah, I thought about that. And refs can give ghost yellow and red cards for "fouls" on the field. They can also decide how much stoppage time there will be, giving a team more or less of a chance to tie it up. However, in the NBA, referees can directly eliminate or even add to points with fouls and free throws. Late calls are not allowed in baseball (and the few times they're made, they're national stories). But in basketball, if a referee blows a late whistle on a foul on a play, people don't like it, but it's no big deal. That direct elimination of points is what puts NBA refs as the most powerful to me.

And let's not forget when Doc Rivers was thrown out 2 minutes into a game. NBA refs can throw people out for nothing too.

I don't see what the big deal is, personally. This ref "scandal" scores as high on my interest radar as the Suns' draft day trade of James Jones.

Yeah, but the Mob is the real selling point for this story.

If anything, this is an opportunity to score tix on the low.

I'm talking this up every time a banker or contractor comes in that can deliver seats ;).

Like we didn't know the games were fixed.

The really, really cool thing about the Rox rings is... they didn't want us to have them :). We beat the system. :)

I don't care if that's true or not, that's how I will always look at it. I makes me happy :)

LOL, that's another good Hollywood idea. The mob came threatening Rudy and Hakeem before game 7, telling them heavy money was at stake for NY to win the championship. Rudy was like, "Go screw yourself." And they double-crossed the mob by convincing John Starks to purposely brick all those jumpers so the Rockets could beat the NBA conspiracy and the mob and the whole evil media empire and save the world for the day. :D
