I bow to your brilliance. Breeding special "fighting" cows and putting them in a ring to fight to the death- including training the fighting cows with weaker animals- yeah - that would be a crime against morality/ nature. I still eat the occasional hamburger-but I doubt the meat came from a fighting cow match. Dr. Of Dunk- I'm not PETA- I even like the occasional hunt-I do not like cruelty. I kill the deer/hog quick and eat the meat.
I absolutely love dogs, and the idea of dog fighting is totally disgusting. Still, with the wording of the poll, I went with the Donaghy option. As a sports poll, the dog fighting doesn't affect the sport in any way. The ref bs impacts my favorite sport in a major way. What's more disturbing to the game and its integrity? The betting.
Even if the dog fighting weren't bad enough, the way Vick killed the dogs that he "had" to kill was disgusting.
did anyone here senator byrd's comments from last thursday apparently. heard them on espn this morning. apparently he is an advocate for the ethical treatment of dogs are at least an adament dog lover. he was pretty emotional
You know what, I actually enjoy bullfighting and don't want it banned. Now I know its inhumane the reality of it can be ugly (FYI the horses are basically torturted and murdered too, not just the bull) but, especially if you've read any books about it and seen some matches, especially in Spain in a place like Sevilla or Madrid - it's just too culturally and hstorically important to go away. And some of it is also really cool to watch especially if you read Death In the Afternoon or The Dangerous Summer . I don't like dogfighting and see no reason why it should be legal, but I am not going to kid myself and say that there's a huge qualitative difference between that and bullfighting. The line isn't as clear as we'd want it to be. You could also say the same goes, to a lesser extent, to horse racing, dog racing, and rodeo, where the animals aren't exactly treated with dignity. And don't even get started on the commerical livestock industry. If Dogfighting is animal torture, then the livestock industry is animal genocide. Now I'm not saying that any of this should be banned, but I'm saying that there are fundamental conflicts and contradictions with the way we approach the issue of animal rights (especially when it comes to dogs). PETA is usually an organization that (rightfully) draws a lot of ridicule from the mainstream - but on this issue at least they are consistent.
Read the poll again...it says nothing about killing dogs. It talks about the "alleged dogfighting". The wording is what throws the poll off. Had they said anything about killing dogs in the poll, Im sure the results would differ.
There's a certain artistry in bullfighting. A sort of ballet between man and beast. Dogfighting not so much.
It's too bad that they can't be less hypocritcal in many other areas, such as their Senior Vice President who takes insulin that has been tested on animals or the killing of 1000's of animal they took in for shelter. As an aside I have long held that bull fighting is no better than **** or dog fighting. It is slow torture to both the bull and the horse (as you said). The rodeo isn't too much better but at least the goal with the rodeo isn't to kill the animals. Now I admit that I may be biased (growing up I sure as hell went to more rodeo's than bull fights) and view bull fighting with much more disdain than rodeos but if I had to choose between eliminating both or none I would go with both.
See, this kind of quote makes me hate bull fighting even more. A "certain artistry"? "Sort of ballet?" How about slowly cutting and torturing a scared and confused bull? I'm truly not an avid animal-rights activist (I believe in medical testing, hunting, etc) but just don't see how anyone can watch a bullfight and be okay with it.
the outrage is particularly hypocritcal in the south where as you say, rodeos and hunting are big business. but hey, dogs catch frisbees
I think fixing NBA games is a bigger deal than killing dogs. Who, btw, is looking at more jail time, Donaghy or Vick?
I agree with this. The NFL will still be here despite the horrendous allegations levied against Vick, guilty or not. The NBA, especially if this does reach farther than one official, has a very good chance of suffering for a long time because of this scandal. When the integrity of the game itself is brought into question, that's worse than one person doing something horrible outside of the sport. I'm guessing and hoping that's how the majority of the respondents read the question. Take sports out of the equation and of course it's dog fighting.
Not really on-topic, but the NFL is so far ahead in being 'America's Sport' that the NFL would probably fair pretty well if they faced game fixing by refs. People's insane love of football would blind them.
Per Sam Fisher: "I don't like dogfighting and see no reason why it should be legal, but I am not going to kid myself and say that there's a huge qualitative difference between that and bullfighting. The line isn't as clear as we'd want it to be. You could also say the same goes, to a lesser extent, to horse racing, dog racing, and rodeo, where the animals aren't exactly treated with dignity. Now I'm not saying that any of this should be banned, but I'm saying that there are fundamental conflicts and contradictions with the way we approach the issue of animal rights (especially when it comes to dogs). " ************************************** These are valid points. I do not support the Rodeo, Bull fighting, **** fighting, animal racing, or for that matter-the circus or zoo. I do occasionally hunt, I wear leather work boots and shoes and eat the occasional hamburger and even less often - lean tenderloin steak. I drive a truck to work where diesel powered equipment burns fossil fuels. Part of my job is to install asphalt and concrete paving- which create runoff problems. In those ways I am contributing to destruction of animal life. I think killing and fighting dogs is sociopathic. It does not matter what I think- Vick will be forgotten in one year and dogs will still be fought.
