Looking to pick up an external drive, somewhere from 350-400 GB. What are the best brands to be looking at to buy? I was looking at some on newegg, seems the ones i looked at were giving people problems, whether it be too loud or overheating. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Never Maxtor.

    Seagate is OK.

    The best is Western Digital.

I have two Western Digital's and have had zero problems, and I seed torrents from one 24-7. Love 'em.

I also own two western digital my books. One is 250gb and the other is 500, One is loaded with p*rn and video games and the other movies and tv shows

Both work awesomely well and are on and used for downloads and such 24/7. Had them for about a year and not one mess-up whats-so-ever. I definitely recommend them~as someone else already said Western digitals r reliable and awesome. I've noticed that they get warm, so every week or so I might pull the plug and let it rest for a couple hours, though I've forgotten to do that for 2 months straight before and nothing was awkward, just a personal thing I guess.

Every manufacturer has problems with drives. Maxtors used to be the best, then they put out duds. Seagate has put out duds. IBM/Hitachi used to be some of the best made until they put out dud drives. Right now WD's Raptor series, Samsung's Spinpoints, and Hitachi's 500GB and 1TB drives are some of the best you can buy.

Of course most of these people are talking about internal hard drives, not external ones. For the most part, all external hard drives are are just internals with a case/interface slapped around them. Go by reviews on newegg - they're probably a better indication of performance.

i have a 500 gb my book from western digital. it's quiet and pretty good looking for a hard drive. dell had some discount on them where you could get it down to 99 bucks but i'm pretty sure that's long gone.

I bought a Maxtor with 300 GB last year and it works fine. Then again, I don't really use it like others do here. I have it off almost 24/7 and just turn it on when I need to store some files.
