Looks like I'm going to have to take out a private student load for my last semester of school. Anybody know where I can get one? My credit is not the sharperst in the book. Please help.

You can ask the financial aid office for help, they should at the minmum point you to where to look, they should make some suggestions based on your situation. You can always ask banks around your area for loans just know that the rates varies from bank to bank (like your mortgage).

To be honest, the fin aid office was not much help.

Here is the gist of what they told me. I have borrowed my maximum amount through the Stafford Loan program. It stinks because I do attend school outside my state and was not able to get in-state tuition and I guess that is why I ran into my limit so fast. They said I could still receive a pell grant so that may help some. Is there any other type of federal assistance I can get?

I figure there must be something, my adjusted gross income was just over $3000 and my total income was just over $7000 for 2006. Not great numbers by any means.

Does anybody know any other routes such as other grants or loans the government will give? I have one dang semester left and I will graduate in December. Is there anything for me?

Well, looks like you are independent, so the parent plus loan option is out. You could ask to see if there are scholarships out there for you, it is harder to get than a loan but you never know. How much do you need? If it is just one semester you could use the bank, just about any of your local bank, or you could talk to the big banks like Citi bank on the phone. Pell and Stafford are the only federal program I know about.

What about Direct Loans and Perkins Loans? I think those work federally also.

I had to get some private loans for my first year of law school, before they started the Grad Plus loans. Check out Access Group, they had good rates when I was looking.

I know a few family members who would gladly cosign for me on a loan. All I need is $7500 for this last semester. My question is, with a goo credit cosigner, am I guaranteed a loan and a better rate?

I want to do this online also so if any of you guys want to point me in the right direction to good lenders please do so.

Sallie Mae handles all of my loans, maybe you could get one directly from them, or they can help point you in the right direction.

I was going to suggest what someone else had mentioned, maybe you can get a load and use your car/home as collateral if your AGI isn't high enough.

You could always try applying for a few credit cards, I know you said your credit isn't the best, but you never know.

Man there are so many lenders to choose from. Sallie Mae, Chase, Loan to Learn, etc. How do I know if I am getting the best deal in terms of interest rates and such. When you borrow fro m a private lender is it the same as borrowin from the government? I mean, does the loan repayment go in 10 year terms>? I know the rates are not better but anything else I shoulkd be aware of?

Go and talk to several lenders. It won't cost you anything, and you'll get an idea of what terms are out there. Big differences between lenders are not uncommon AT ALL. Good luck. :)

If a person co-signs with me on this loan will the loan show up on their credit report or will the inquiry by the company show up or will both instances show up?

I am thinking about signing up with Astrive Student Loans, you know the one that has commercials all over the place now, with my grandmother as a co-signor. Does anybody have any history with them? They are backed by Charter One Bank, is that a good financial institution? I had also thought about going with Loan to Learn or a bigger more well known company like Sallie Mae or Chase or Citi. Like I said, I have not had any history with these types of things. Are there any companies you guys would recommend?

My financial aid office is completely clueless. They didn't help me with the selection process at all and gave me no real guidance. If you can provide me with any help I thank you.

The loans I have researched, Astrive, Citi, etc., are saying their rates are around 8-10%. Is this normal for private student loans or is this too high?

That range of interest rates you gave does not seem too bad. I think federal rates are like 6.8% and above but I could be wrong.

thanks that makes me feel a lil better. Anybody got a company they would like to tell me about? I heard that some loans offer co-signors to release their right after so many on time payments or automatic payments. I would really like that as a option. Also any other borrower benefits too.

Like I say there are tons of financing options available through different companies and I have tried to compare with little luck. Any suggestions?
