But why would you ever want a spot of shooter over a guy who can shoot off the dribble? I mean, maybe in the Hakeem era that made Kenny Smith more a piece, but with the zone and switching defenses, and the fact that we already have to Spot up shooters in Head and Battier, I think we're much better off with guys who can create off the dribble.
Well said, shooting off the dribble is a much more difficult. The greatest shooting guards in history are those that can shoot off the dribble... Jordan, Bryant, Worthy, Ray Allen, etc...
Bruce Bowen is a good spot-up shooter similar to Battier. Spot-up shooters are much easier to come by than guys that can creat their own shots off the dribble.
Currently there is a Poll on ESPN's Basketball page near the bottom right asking: Which team is the most improved this off season: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/index Be sure to vote for the Rockets
wow guys, of course shooting off the dribble is harder than spotting up, but francis simply CANNOT spot up shoot.
The % stats also don't show how efficient the players used the shot clock. If one player kills shot clock before shooting , this usually lessens chances for offensive rebounds and increases likelihood of fastbreaks by the other team as they all expect to rebound and to run out. On the other hand, a good shot (usually off ball movement) that is missed keeps the defense off-balance and creates more offensive rebounding opportunities.
a little defensive are we? francis vs. sura in spot-up shooting is such a non-issue i could care less. i was just having fun with your "steve francis is better than bob sura in every aspect" comment. steve the houston rocket was not a good spot-up shooter, bob sura, AS A ROCKET, was surprisingly ok. if francis has improved that aspect of his game since that time, great, but ultimately it probably makes no differece whatsoever.
Is this the biggest thread of all???? But, I'd rather have Francis than Sura. That is a no brainer. And we all saw how Sura helped the Rockets when he was playing. He was so good that he earned a 3 or 2 year contract extension. He was a KEY contributor. And Steve bring to the Table even more than what Sura brought.
LOL! Y'all need to focus on winning a championship before the decade is out... And proper management.
I pop in on occasion just to see how things are in Rocket land... I see you all think Francis is the answer. He wasn't the answer 3 years ago, what makes you think he'll be the answer this year? I see this experiment resulting in ultimate failure just keeping it real. Look at the Rockets track record. When it comes to free agents, your GM is clueless as to who to go after ie: Bonzi Wells (I thought I saw a post about him contributing this year!, lol) Raefer Alston, Juwan Howard... should I go on? You will win 50+ games this year, but what will that do other than get yo u another first round exit?
I hope this moves works out for the Rockets, Francis ego could get in the way of the team goals if he's not satisfied with his role whatever that may be.
You do realize that this is Morey's first offseason as GM so track record for the franchise doesn't apply to him it applies to Dawson. So no need to go on.
who said he IS the answer.. but for 2.4 M, he is a good addition to a team with tmac, yao, battier, mike james, bonzi, & scola this is a cheap, low-risk move.. but experiment? why? steve has proven he can carry this team.. i'm pretty sure he can contribute to this team.. bonzi wells - again cheap & low-risk.. he literelly fell into our laps.. is it really surprising for him to contribute on a team with a coach where he played the best basketball of his career? and alston and howard were not acquired thru FA.. yes you should.. you should embarass yourself more.. you have the balls to tell us which team you're a fan of?
Incorrect statement. Nobody said he was the best at it or even mediocre. We were comparing him to Sura in that regards. He is a better-spot up shooter than Sura. Sura is not a good shooter on any level.
