Well, I didn't like the original movie, so I'm sure i won't like this one...I guess the only musicals i've seen are Grease and High School Musical... I bet it'll make a lot of money...
Think it'll probably open pretty small, Still have Harry Potter and Tformers out there and the new Adam Sandler movie comes out this week, think Hairspray's gonna be more of niche movie, be surprised if it pulls in 6 Mil
I liked the first one, though it seemed a little long. If you want to see music in a current movie go see "Once" if you can find it. As a kid, you didn't like Sound of Music or the Wizard of Oz? How about the Rankin-Bass classic "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" ?
I wouldn't be surprised if Hairspray does better than Chuck and Larry...obviously the movie appeals to the female demographic, but you can bet many said females will drag their reluctant significant others with them...I've been on the bad end of that deal a few times (Crossroads, On the Line). It's gotten great reviews, a lot of PR and features a young cast. And while Adam Sander still has box office pull, his comedies (imo) have gotten progressively worse and this current one has gotten horrid reviews. Look for Hairspray to be third when it's all said and done.
I tell you WHAT. I like the way they made Amanda Bynes look different. She surely has grown a lot. I am sure my daughters will find this movie entertaining... that is, if the rating is right and if the content is ok. I never saw the one with Riki Lake...
You're severely underestimating Adam Sandler's pull at the box office. Almost all of his movies get bad reviews. Click - 32% on rottentomatoes.com - $137 million The Longest Yard - 30% on rottentomatoes.com - $158 million 50 First Dates - 44% - $120 million Anger Management - 43% - $133 million Mr. Deeds - 22% - $126 milion Adam Sandler is easily the most bankable comedic actor right now. He'll probably go down as the most successful comedic actor of our generation, now that Jim Carrey is doing more and more drama. Unless there is a major female superstar like Julia Roberts or Catherine-Zeta Jones, chick flicks are a very hit/miss proposition. Film adaptations of broadway musicals are even riskier, especially with this one opening up in the middle of the summer. Make no mistake about it, men control the North American box office machine, all the way from the top level producers down to the masses buying tickets. Chuck and Larry has been heavily marketed, has Adam Sandler for laughs, Jessica Biel for sex appeal, a storyline that appeals to females, and a PG-13 rating that will bring in the kids and teenagers. The buzz for Transformers is slowly wearing off, and Harry Potter had an extended opening weekend, so it's already made half of what it will gross in the United States, most likely. Chuck and Larry will be number one this weekend. The only question is, by how much. Hairspray will struggle to get fourth, IMO...
Wow...I think you're overestimating his appeal...especially considering HP as the seventh and final book in the series debuting Friday at midnight to help boost its box office numbers a little. No doubt Adam Sandler is bankable...which vexes me since his last projects have been total crap. Still I think Hairspray has a chance to surprise and nothing beats HP. I guess realistically: 1) HP 2) Chuck and Larry 3) Transformers 4) Hairspray What I'm hoping: 1) HP 2) Transformers 3) Hairspray 4) Chuck and Larry ...not so much I'm hoping Hairspray does well; just that I hope Chuck and Larry doesn't.
Most of the Harry Potter fans have already seen the movie. Actually, I think the book release will hurt Harry Potter's numbers. All the Harry Potter fans will buy the book and read it this weekend, rather than go see the movie. As for Sandler, I've had mixed feelings on his recent stuff. Click was awesome, and The Longest Yard was good. 50 First dates and Anger Management were pretty good. Mr. Deeds sucked hard.
"Singing in the Rain" is another great musical. It's one of the 5 most entertaining movies ever, IMHO.
Well Goblet of Fire looks like it dropped about fifty percent from its first week to its second...so if Order of the Phoenix holds to that it will gross around 35 to 40 million this weekend. Sandler's best openings have been in the 40-45 million range...so it is possible....but I still think the fans will put down the book long enough to see the movie a second or third time and push it to number 1 again. I like Sandler...but the last movie of his I've liked or been interested in seeing was 50 First Dates. I guess I was somewhat hoping his comedies would get a little deeper over time and he would start to show more range as an actor...like Carey. Guess not.
I JUST GOT BACK FROM HAIRSPRAY! I had to go with the family. It was easily th worst movie I have seen this summer. It was boring as hell. I actually closed my eyes and tried to sleep for about a half hour, but the singing and music was so loud that I couldnt.
Click was a little dramatic. I know a lot of people didnt like it, but I did. I thought it was his best movie in a while
I saw Once at the River Oaks a while back and that was a really excellent musical. I never liked John Waters so I don't care for this thing.
