No, I was definitely not familiar with him. but from now on I guess I would keep an eye on him this is definitely an eye-opening, stereotype-shattering read for me. props to etan, my respect for NBA players in general have definitely gone up a couple of levels now.
Well just read the original Bogut article. Bogut definitely get the American culture wrong. I think it's safe to say in every culture, pro atheletes somewhat flaunt the money if it is excessive. The extent probably can be argued and NBA is more so. The league average is like what 5M? (dont quote me on that), a lot of players grow up poor. But NBA is just NBA, the general America, regardless of race, work hard to try to make ends meet. Also, this culture worships you if you are capable and tease you otherwise. Dirk, Yao, Peja etc all prove themselves. They got their pass. So everything Yao does in media's eyes here is beautiful (for lack of better term). Bogut and others need to realize that. Remember Dallas management used to tell Wang Zhizhi in simple english " no play good, no pictures" It is an adolescent culture in this country.
Was Etan Thomas's rant even necessary? Anyone who reads that article can see a seed of truth in it. Of course not everyone in the USA is like that. But This is Andrew Bogut. Who cares what he says.
Etan went to my high school (Booker T) in Tulsa. We all come out of there brilliant and artuculate (except Amber Valetta and RW McQuarters, their class speeches sucked).
Does anyone else see the irony in the replies that say something along the lines 'wow he's in the nba and not stupid' in an article from someone thats talking about generalizations. I guess I'm the only one that finds this a bit comical.
You give him 5 seconds and he'll take 1/2 an hour to tell you about his stances. This won't be the last time he makes news here. Next time will probably be the D&D.
I don't think gay men do all this charity work with their WIVES. lol He seems pretty cool, and im impressed with the article. I don't see how he and his wizard team mate brendon haywood got into it.
andrew's still a young kid and what he said was just probably an impulsive reaction to the poor season he's had...from what i hear bogut's from blue collar background so this NBA lifestyle is all whizz bang to him...so give him a break cos he aint too bright...after all he's from melbourne
The guy has a brain and knows how to write and is quite reasonable! Impressed indeed. Where did the guy get his degree? Is he from suburb or the inner city?
Every foreigner makes generalized comments about American culture. And every American make generalized comments about foreign culture. Who cares?
lol, i went to syracuse just like etan, if he really did write that, he's at least smarter than most of the school
he also left out Dirk... and I thought it's Pyruen's job to point out any omission of Yao for us. On the topic, I'm looking forward to reading Bogut's response to this though I doubt he can impress as much as Etan with his writing.
