I'm at working in my last 16hrs of a 36hr shift and I just got a call from my sister who's watching my dog that my dog was bit by something. The dog is very shaky and silent. and she just lays on the ground when not held. It's my beagle that I got last year on 6/6/6 (see other thread).

Anyways, the dog supposedly has a golfball (maybe bigger) red bump on her stomache. They think she might have been bitten by a snake. I'm having a hard time concentrating on work when all I can think about is my little bud injured. I'm hoping she pulls through, she's at the vet right now. I know a lot of people think it's dumb cause it's a dog. But man, it's the dog's loyalty that makes it a family member to me. (man's best friend).

Anyways...just thought I'd post about it. Not sure why. Just hope she pulls through.

from all the dogbite stories I have heard (coworkers, friends etc), the dog is usually fine in a couple of days and builds immunity for future bites. I think its in their genes, especially hound and hunting dogs. Hope yours is ok.

By boss' dog was bitten by a copperhead a few weeks ago but he pulled through (a much bigger dog than a beagle though). He was given anti-venom and seemed to recover within a few days... now he's much more tentative when going outside.

I have a 90 lb black lab that was bitten by a copper head about 2 years ago.

When I came home from work, I noticed a bit of swelling around his neck. When I woke up the next morning, his neck was over twice its normal size; he couldn't really get up all that well, was having trouble breathing, and literally drug his nose on the carpet when he walked.

I took him to the vet......where we found 2 puncture wounds in his neck from the snake. The vet administered some kind of steroid/anit venom, which he said probably saved his life. It took him at least 3-4 days to return to normal, and now won’t go 50 ft near anything resembling a snake. ;)

Is she at the vets now?

Dogs usually handle snakebites decently, and bites/stings generally but you should get them to the vet ASAP.

One of my dogs got stung by wasps one summer and swoll up like a melon. Rushed to the vet and she was fine after a cortizone shot and a couple of days of rest.

There shouldn't be any worries, your dog is going to be fine. Don't worry about it, it's at the hands of the vet.. nothing you can do about it now and thinking about it some more won't help.

Let us know how it turns out. I hate it when dogs are suffering. They are just loyal, and totally trusting of you, and it feels awful when something is wrong with them, and you want to help them.

I hope your dog pull through ok. I am glad it's at the vet.

My dog was bit by a snake on her lip once. It swelled up pretty good. But, the snake wasn't venomous; she had an allergic reaction and the vet gave her an anti-histimine which made it better pretty quick.

How moronic. I consider my dogs family members and I'm not even ashamed to admit it. Hope all is well with yours, bud.

So, is it ok to call in to work because something happens to a pet? I always got the feeling that pets don't count.

Same here, my dog is a family member and my best friend. I'm sure she'll be fine, b/c dogs and other animals have certain protective defenses built in. Its sort of like the same reason why they don't get sick from eating raw meat, drinking dirty water, etc...

I walk with my dog through the forest sometimes near my place, and have seen some snakes. My dog always jumps back whenever she sees one. She doesn't mess around with those things even if they are small.

I honestly don't see how anyone could not consider their dog a part of the family. When my dachshund's back legs were paralyzed (common condition that stems from their bad backs), I shelled out the $1200 even though there was no guarantee it would work. Thankfully, it did.

Hope your pup is doing well. Let us know.

Could be a snake. Could also be a spider. Some spider venoms can do unbelievable damage. Please keep us up to date on her progress.
