Indiana Continues Search For Point Guard
    July 18, 2007 - 11:01 am
    Indianapolis Star -
The Pacers feel their most glaring need is at point guard, but the search continues.

The market has dwindled in the past week. Among the free agents still available are Brevin Knight, Steve Francis, Earl Boykins, Jannero Pargo and Keith McLeod. The Pacers have had conversations with the agents for Pargo and McLeod. Starter Jamaal Tinsley is the only true point guard on the roster.

"I'm not going to put words into (president Larry Bird's) mouth, but he's constantly trying to put the best basketball team on the court," O'Brien said. "If that involves signing a free agent, we'll do it. If it involves a trade, we will do that. But his job and my job are to make sure we try to improve the Indiana Pacers and the personnel we have."

Time to trade Luther/Rafer for Ike Diogu and cash considerations. Everyone wants to keep Luther because he can shoot. I don't disagree, but what about his lack of defense on PG's and SG's. He is getting murdered by both of them.

This will also allow us to pick up Steve on the cheap, just in case MJ loses his mind, which is a distinct possiblitly. His job was taken by a rookie last year and he moped the whole time. My concerns with Steve is his constant dribbling going nowhere, chemistry with Tmac and trying to be the Franchise againd, and lack of D sometimes (Steve can rebound for a point guard thoug)h, however, Rick has options when he does that - MJ or AB.

Don't resign Chuck or Deke: We have Yao, Butler, Scola, Ike (can play the 4 and 5 in the west), Landry (I'm thinking D league or inactive),to man the C and PF positions.

Cut JLIII and Novak: Novak is light and cannot effectively check 3's (too slow) and 4's (too light).

I like the 3 options with Shane, Bonzi, Harris

I like the 2 options with Tmac, Kirk (learn to shoot - Adleman's offense gets you good looks),

I like the 1 options with MJ, Steve, and AB

i'd trade lucas or/and luther for draft picks and cash. i'd wait before we trade luther for ike, maybe before the deadline, if our pfs, is not what we expected.

I think I'd much rather trade Rafer for Jeff Foster. He'd be a great back-up center.

Then probably throw in Head+Sura for Diogu.

As much as we want them to, I don't think the Rockets will trade Alston..I haven't even heard his name mentioned once by the organization in the offseason, and they talked about moving Lucas only. We might be done with deals

I am totally with you. Jeff Foster is an absolute monster on the boards. He is what chuck hayes is with us but with more size.

I think Alston's T-Shirt of "I'll be back next year" has done the job and made the ROX forget about him regarding trades.

Yep. With Yao likely not playing any more than 34-35mpg, Foster's the perfect player to have play a 13-15mpg role. Like you said, he hussles and boards like crazy. I'd absolutely love to have him here.

Back-up center is rarely talked about when discussing Houston's holes. I'm not sold on Jackie yet, and it'd be real advantageous to have quality center that could even start on some teams to back up Yao since he may not ever be a 40mpg player.

Trade them John Lucas for two second-round picks, for one if that's all we can get. One problem solved for us.

Alston is the ying to the yang of Mike James (or even Steve Francis).

I see no reason to gamble on a trade at this point unless it's a no brainer.

Alston drives us all crazy when he's playing >35mpg. But the fact remains that Alston is a "true PG" but can't shoot. MJames can shoot but isn't a true PG ...he's more of a 2 guard stuck in a PG body.

Unless you get an OBVIOUS upgrade at PG for somebody that can play >35mpg (which isn't MJames), having both Rafer and MJames is a nice compromise. They each do what they each do well but they both have problems.

If you can pick up SF3 for cheap, you do it. Then during training camp you let SF3, Rafer and James slug it out. The odd man out at that point gets traded. But lets see what we got before making more big changes.

Do NOT trade Deke. Period. Not after that inspirational performance he gave last year, not after we just traded one of our two esteemed veterans in Juwan, and not after Mutombo was just honored internationally as a respected humanitarian.

Now that that's out of the way, trading Luther/Head for Ike would of course be conditional upon Steve signing with us. Ike is a promising project much like Butler , however I think these guys deserve a chance to succeed and they won't get too far with our loaded frontcourt now. Look for Ike moving to be far more serious if Jermaine O'neal indeed remains a Pacer.

The earliest time we should even consider trading Rafer will be at the February trade deadline. We have to be prudent about this. PG are not that easy to get.

Of course we have MJ and AB locked in but we need the safety net that Rafer will give us at least early in the season so that we can evaluate our roster better.

Now if a ridiculously favorable deal lands on our lap for Rafer we do it without a second thought. If Indiana wanted to give us Diogu and Granger + fillers to land Rafer, I'll say do it immediately. Larry Bird cannot be that dumb.

Keep Rafer for now - we will review next February.

    deke is a free agent...
their going to trade JL3/sura/etc... for a backup pf/center that Adelman likes. if they can't get anything done then they will resign Deke just incase Yao goes down again. Deke doesnt fit well in Adelmans offense. he doesnt have the post up moves like yao and he can barely catch the ball so that leaves passing out. it would be 4 on 5 on the offensive end. deke is only good defensively and put backs.
rockets have a loaded frontcourt now? lol

I really do not think they would be willing to trade Diogu first of all. Second of all do we really need a 3rd or 4rth Power Forward now since we traded for scola. Also no one in the league trades away their "real" big men for pg and what not except the Fakers (see: Shaq).

Foster sucks. No offensive game whatsoever. He will however give you some rebounds. I'd do the Head/Sura deal for Diogu in a heartbeat and bring on the Francis. Francis does not have to play with James at the same time. It doesn't matter. What matters is that our cupboards are stocked with firepower and we are the most dangerous team in the NBA.
