...in Australia, that is (it IS the title of the article). A few comments on the Summer League, though. http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,22093721-12428,00.html ADELAIDE 36ers fans are a step closer to seeing favourite son Brad Newley in an NBL uniform in 2007-08, the star off-guard ruling out an NBA shot this season. Drafted last month at 54 by the Houston Rockets, Newley, 22 and 199cm, played for the club in its summer league hit-out in Las Vegas before heading to the Gold Coast where he arrived yesterday to join the Boomers in camp. He has been invited back to trial again with Houston next year. "I really enjoyed it," he said of his three games as a Rocket, during which he averaged a modest 3.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. "I felt like I belonged to that team and thought it went pretty well. "But it is completely different to team ball." Newley, who averaged 19.1 points at 46 per cent, 4.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 102 NBL games with Townsville before signing with Adelaide, did not find the way players approached summer league – going all out for themselves – necessarily compatible with how he plays. "You don't see a lot of assists," he said. "But the thing about it is you have to hit your shots. You get a look and it has to be down." Newley said he had not made the most of his shot opportunities in the early games but was happy with how he finished, elevated to the starting five for the Rockets' last game against Washington. Invited back by Houston head coach Rick Adelman to play again in next year's summer league, Newley now must decide whether to play with the 36ers this season or try Europe. The NBA's Development League is not an option. "You can definitely rule out the D-League," he said. "I won't be playing there. It will either be with the 36ers or in Europe." Understandably still reeling from his whirlwind return and straight onto the track with the Australian squad on the Gold Coast, he said beating New Zealand was now his top priority. The Boomers are part way through a seven-day training camp in preparation for the FIBA Oceania Men's Championship where they face New Zealand for the right to play at the Beijing Olympics. Games are scheduled for August 20, 22 and 24 in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane respectively.
LONG LONG LONG term... I didn't see that much game when he played, but he didn't suck. He just didn't stand out when playing against guys that were in the d-league and not in the NBA. He needs to be more decisive and make the shots and he needs more dribble moves.
Exactly right, he definently didn't look bad out there. Actually looked better on defense than I anticipated. He might have a place in the NBA eventually.
it's too bad we don't have enough room to bring him over for the D-League. he's going to have a hard time developing without facing some stiffer competition. looking to move to a Euro squad sounds like a good move.
What....no wines over the moon quotes? That's the only reason to keep him around , since we are stock-piling talent left & right.
Reminds me of Shane Heel. The Australian that was on the Timberwolves a while back, pretty good shooter but not good for much else.
He's staying in the sense the Rocket can retain his draft rights forever. Whether he ever gets a contract is another question.
This is good move for brad. i'm sure our coaching staff gave him a hint that he needs to go to a world class league to farther develope he's game. no disrespect to the australian league, but there not exactly a world class league like the ones in spain and italy are.
