It's not happening. Morey is a stats guy, and the stats say Desmond Mason isn't very good. John Hollinger wrote the following in one of his blog posts:
I agree with Hollinger completely on this one. I'd much rather see a trade something like Rafer, Sura, Head, Lucas, and Snyder, for a re-signed Travis Outlaw, the rights to Joel Freeland, and Darius Miles' contract. I'd rather take a flyer on Darius Miles for 3 years than sign this cat for 5 at that ridiculous money.
You do realize Miles knees are so shot the Blazers are trying to convince him to retire? I'm kind of surprised if you're not aware of that, jopatmc. You're usually more up on that stuff than I am.
Funny thing about that game where Yao and Mason got into it was that after the game Mason needed Yao to sign 2 jerseys for him and Yao signed them.
Desmond Mason is trash. He's a swingman and he attempted ZERO three pointers last year. The previous two years he shot 6, and 8 respectively. If he were young enough to be counted on as a slasher, he'd at least be one-dimensional. But now that he's getting older, he's ZERO-dimensional. Also, check out his career A/TO: 1.0. Bad for a guard, and last year it was 0.6. Yikes.
I would bet I know a lot more about Miles than you do. His knees are shot like Steve Francis' career is supposedly over. Watch Steve light it up for the Clippers this next season. It's all about multimillionaire players with guaranteed money getting out of situations they do not want to be in and being able to do what they want, which is ball it up in the playoffs on the big stage. Miles is gonna run off to some playoff team just like Francis is and all of a sudden you're gonna be seeing highlights of him swooping in and throwing down on the break and everybody's gonna be talking about what a comeback he made. It's the same ole story every year man. I am up on this stuff. Don't buy all that crap from the Portland writers. They want Miles run out of town and disgraced because he hasn't been the leader that the team signed him up to be, and he has been a total screwball. But Miles ain't got nothing else to do and can do nothing else besides play ball. He's dying to get out of there. Plus, besides, the deal isn't really predicated on Miles coming back. Miles would be in the deal to entice Portland to do it. Without Miles in the deal, Portland would laugh it away, and they for sure ain't gonna do the deal as long as there is the chance that Miles retires. They would look to deal Miles only when it becomes clear that Miles ain't retiring and is planning on playing. Then they will know they have to get him out of there. The deal is predicated on getting a 6'9" young blossoming athlete (Outlaw) who excelled and excels in an uptempo game playing the 4 along with a very young (20) athletic PF with great size (6'11" 240 lb) and a very nice looking jump shot with lots of range and athleticism to take it in and dunk on guys. I'd rather take those guys on along with a possible $8 mill per year salary anchor than to take on a 6'5" athlete that can dunk and basically can't do anything else very good. Outlaw is 4 inches taller, more athletic, younger, and a much better shooter/defender/shotblocker than Desmond Mason. Did you happen to catch any Blazer games last year when Outlaw was running up and down the court at the 4 spot???? I wanna be able to match up with SA, Dallas, and Phoenix on any given night and because of the contrast of styles, we need players like this to go along with what we already got.
That was exactly my first thought. Outside of the personal issues with him and our guys, he simply seems redundant given the twos we have. He would have been a great pickup last offseason, but not now.
You do realize that Miles makes more than Sura, Head, Lucas and Snyder combined? Unless Outlaw is going to sign for the minimum, then that deal wouldn't come close to working.
Adelman doesnot need the attack-rim-only type , neither do the rox. plus, the history really sucks .....ok, I hate him.
