    Astros Retain Four Coaches

HOUSTON (AP) - Tony Pena was hired Tuesday as bench coach for the Houston Astros, who also kept four others to complete their coaching roster for the 2002 season.

First base coach Jose Cruz, pitching coach Burt Hooton, hitting coach Harry Spillman and bullpen coach John Tamargo will return.

Mike Cubbage, a five-year coach with the team, was hired as special assistant to the general manager, and former major league manager Gene Lamont was hired as third base coach.

Cubbage will evaluate player personnel at the major league level and throughout the Astros' minor league system.

Pena managed the Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs for the past three seasons. His team finished 82-57 this season, winning the Pacific coast League East Division by 10 games.
