He signed a contract last week. They traded up to get him over any other draft PF prospect in the range. He's staying for the short term. edit: wrong
I can see Butler as being the air apparent to Deke as the back-up. I can see Butler getting most of the minutes behind yao to begin the season because a) he is younger and more equipped for a run and gun team b) deke has alot of miles. we know what he can do, so we should save him for the right match-ups. if he stinks it up you still have deke. and chuck has shown he can be effective in small spurts at C
I obviously agree with you on most of your lineup. I like Head more than Snyder also, but just as Harris/Landry, its really a tough choice. The reason I put Head in blue rather than snyder is that just like rafer is a commodity in this point guard frenzy, so is luthers perceived ball handling skills and more importanly- that jumper. Heres another name: Jason Kapono. Grossly overpaid players are what helped me pick Alston and Head as the most expendable assets which would net you the most in return. In my eyes, the point isnt to fill out the end of the bench, we already have that. And as a side note, I really feel like Snyder is going to thrive under Adelman. A guy that athletic that can cut as well as he can is a definite plus in Adelmans system. He cant shoot, but apparently neither can Novak =)
you're right...it reall is a win-win situation whether it be head or snyder. both could contribute if given minutes. on a side note...I am still not convinced that Bonzi will add alot to the roster. defensively I like what he brings to the table. but offensively, I think we have better options during the long haul of the season. bonzi is really only effective in a very small amount of situations. it would be a shame to trade off someone like head only to have bonzi bolt next season. we are essentially left with snyder as our back-up sg. if I were morey that would be the position I would target in any trade at this point. a young sg who we could groom for the future.
I believe the way it works is D-League players don't count against either your IR or Active Roster. They would still be under contract, so essentially you could expand on your 15 man roster (12 active + 3 IR) by designating players to the D-League. I would assume that because this could be taken advantage of that is why only a 2 year limit is put on any NBA players D-League eligibility.
LOL its cool man, its just the BBS. MAN i cant get any work done when the freaking rockets make a trade.....i left to lunch and i saw the summer league game...i bet clutchfans and the rockets offseason leads to millions of dollars in unproductive salary
Both Oden and Brooks are rookies though, so that is not really an apple to apple comparison. Anyway, my point is that it is too risky to solely rely on Butler as the backup center, while Deke is pretty much offering his service for free...
no, you still only have 15 players total. http://www.nba.com/preview2005/d_league.html This is an old article though.. I am trying to find something more recent.
Brooks is two years older than Butler, and Oden, well, insert joke here. The bottom line is that Butler did indeed show flashes in the actual NBA real league, not summer league, two seasons ago and is only 22. Anyway i'm not sure that Deke has many services to offer, especially this particular team. And I guarantee you if, a third C is needed, that Leslie would much prefer to pay the undrafted rookie minimum than the veteran minimum.
I don't think we're done moving players around, but anyhow... Starting 5: Yao T-Mac Battier Alston Scola Bench: James Butler Hayes Brooks Head Bonzi Deke IR: Harris Snyder Lndry Out: Sura Jake T Reed JLiii Novak?? I could see Novak beating out Harris, but I had to include my boy Harris and rep the owls!
It is really not only about the age. Both Brooks and Oden are new to the big stage. Butler supposely already had enough knowledge about NBA as well as summer league. I sure hope Butler can become a good backup center for us. But there must be a reason that Spurs regard him as a bagage rather than asset and would not mid give him away ...
because the spurs are over the luxury tax threshold and are stacked at PF/C. There were no minutes for him in SA last year, and that was unlikely to change this year. To put in in perspective, the BBS mascot Vasilis "mommy help me" Spanoulis, played over 4x as many minutes as Butler did. Like I said before, Butler had a very efficient season in 2006, and that is why the spurs got him, and at this stage he is better bargain than Mutumbo.
and his contract expires after this season so he would leave anyways, might aswell recoup some money.
