His wife and mother will be there -- Bill and Hillary will be there as will many other national and international dignitaries. Why is GWB choosing to skip the funeral of one of America's strongest women?

This seems like an event that the president of the United States must attend -- Lady Bird was a part of so much history in our country.

Am I missing something -- if so I apologize in advance, but all reports so far having him taking part in other activities.

Once a jackass, always a jackass? He should be there...but I'm glad he's not. You can't believe the traffic problems he causes when he drops in on Austin.

Maybe he's boycotting to protest LBJ's military escalation in Vietnam. He certainly wasn't a fan of it back then.

I won't begrudge him this, you can't go to everyone's funeral. With the House just voting to withdraw troops (by April) I can see him having some extra strategerizing to do. And for whatever reason, I tend give first ladys less credit: they seem to me like just cheerleaders; which is perfectly understandable as a supportive spouse, but nothing I feel like paying tribute to. Granted, she probably had the most stressful 8 years of any Executive wife since Eleanor, although Pat Nixon might disagree. I'm just glad I haven't seen the standard Alpha-wife obituary phrase "epitome of grace" over and over again, true though it might be.

Lady Bird was an extremely important person in our history -- she is the start of the political environmental movement amongst many other achievements.

The president should be there with the first lady -- it disappoints me that he is skipping this event in his 'home state' of Texas no less.

W has been quietly avoiding as many public appearances as possible due to the fact that he doesn't want to be publicly booed. He skipped the opening day of the Nationals this year and has turned down several requests to appear before the public. More and more he has become isolated.

I thought it was odd as well. Also, is his dad not attending either?
Maybe they aren't announcing his plans yet for security reasons. I'd be surprised if they didn't attend.

He's not attending because his favorite Nickelodeon cartoons are on TV at the same time as the funeral.

I guess this is as good a place as any to post this. my father always did not like mrs johnson because a lot people believed mrs johnson blacklisted ertha kitt for anti-vietnam statements.

it was reported that ertha kitt made lady bird cry

Did a play with her in Florida in 1992. One of the meanest, orneriest old ladies I've ever met.

    Just nasty

There wasn't much chance they'd get along.
It would violate the natural order of things.

I was looking up mrs. johnson biography, my dad's family is from east texas, a notoriously racist area, so I know why my dad probably made that assumption.
