Rockets trade Spanoulis to Spurs, but Greek star seeks return to homeland

SAN ANTONIO -- The NBA champion San Antonio Spurs have acquired guard Vassilis Spanoulis from the Houston Rockets in exchange for center Jackie Butler and the draft rights to Luis Scola.

The Rockets also are giving the Spurs a 2009 second-round draft pick and other considerations in the trade, the Spurs said in a news release late Thursday.

Spanoulis, who averaged 2.7 points and 0.9 assists in 31 games as a rookie last year, has said he didn't want to return to the Rockets because he was homesick and wanted to remain in his native Greece.

Butler played in 11 games for the Spurs last year. He averaged 3.7 points and 2 rebounds.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said he expects Scola to help his team immediately.

"He adds experience and toughness at a position of need on our roster and is an NBA-ready player with a very high basketball IQ," Morey said in a statement.

The San Antonio Express-News reported in its online edition that Spanoulis was expected to remain in Europe.

Spanoulis said in a telephone interview with Houston television station KRIV from Greece that the trade didn't change his mind.

"Nothing changes my mind. I still want to stay in Greece," he said.

Hayes is a better energy guy than Butler, however, Butler can score around the basket and give us minutes at the 4 and 5 spot, which makes him more valuable than Chuck. Chuck is limited to the 4 spot only.

For the record, Chuck played center at college, and played some minutes for the Rockets when Yao was out. But I would agree that he shouldn't be played at center.

but we don't want Yao to guard Okur out the 3pt line. Jazz still causes match up problems for us.

I am worried. I have an impression, everytime San Antonio is doing anything on the market, they are a winner of the deal. I am afraid, they know something more than us. And either Scola is not willing to come to NBA at all or Spanoulis is willing to come to their team. Or both cases at once.

    Hopefully, I'm wrong.

Did you read the chron article saying that Morey had already called Scola, and the latter is eager to join Rockets. Also did you read that Span expressed that he would never come back to NBA after he knew he was traded?

Yeah, I've read it. It's just an impression. Hopefully, it's that good as it seems at the first sight and it's sabotage of our guy Dennis Lindsey :p

To be honest, its too early to tell how this trade will work out. Granted, the hype around Scola was/is amazing, we'll never know unless he suits up for us.

Same thing goes for Brooks, Landry, Butler, etc.

All Morey's moves have either been hated or loved, but I'd like to give the guy at least a season before we evaluate his performance as GM.

    In any case, GO ROCKETS!!!!!!!!

I don't know why San Antonio is doing this in-division, but hopefully it doesn't mean that he's impossible to bring over. Two thumbs up and...nice!

No he's just stupid. He's the second coming of Quitten.

But anywho, not like he would get any minutes playing for the Spurs either.

As AOL like to say it: GOODBYE.

    ..and helloo Scola
