Safe to say that Morey has earned my trust as a fan. That's important too because if this inaction had carried on another week or two, I'd be protesting outside Toyota Center. Excellent management. Taking the initiative and being David to the Spurs' Goliath.
V-span is absolute garbage in the NBA. I still, to this day, do not see the fascination with him. I think because he's European people see a bunch of potential that's not really there. To think we got a possible legitimate starting PF for him is unbelievable. Clutch got it exactly right on the front page. Low risk, high reward. Kind of reminds me of the Reece Gaines/2nd rounder for Mike James trade a couple of years ago. I don't know what I'm most happy about...that we got a PF, or we can finally stop talking about Spanoulis like he's the next great one. Dan Langhi had more potential than him.
Hey do you all think you can slow down a bit on posting? I'm having a hard time catching up with the reading...
Well I didn't have any real opinion on it until now I didn't know whether to like it or not like it, not because of losing VSpan but because of the 2nd rounder.. But after reading more about Scola, Now I like it!
Yes, outside of the 500k, the rest is coming from the player. Rockets can only offer up to the MLE anyway so if his buyout is in the $3 million range as some places have reported he's going to have to do what Nocioni did and just cop the hit to get his foot into the NBA. Dude is paying out of his own pocket to get into the NBA. This guy means business.
here's an interesting article on Jackie Butler BUSTED: NBA'S JACKIE BUTLER STEALS WOMANS JACKET ****EXCLUSIVE**** August 18. Chandra S, a faithful reader of ************.com, thought that she found her Prince Charming when she met NBA forward Jackie Butler. But she soon realized that the bulky ballplayer was more like the Prince of Thieves. Chandra first met NY Knicks forward Jackie Butler at Jay Z's 40/40 Club a few months ago. The 6-foot-10 inch 260 pound Butler, who has since been traded to the San Antonio Spurs, seemed to be immediately taken by the lovely Chandra. According to her, "when he first saw me his eyes opened up really wide." After a night of good conversation, Chandra and the chubby forward decided to go back to his place - and that's when things began to go wrong. Chandra explained, "he was coming on to me very strong and I told him I was tipsy." And when she finally agreed to have sex with him, it wasn't at all what she bargained for. Chandra tells us, "he laid on top of me with all his weight ... breathing hard like he was out of control and kissing on my neck." And after it was all over she claims, "I went into the bathroom to spit several times and then I finally threw up." When Chandra got home the next day she realized that she forgot her $600 Avirex jacket in Butler's jeep. She immediately contacted Butler and asked him to return the jacket, but he refused. Chandra, a receptionist, even offered to pay to have the jacket shipped to her, but the $7 million NBA player still refused. Finally, Butler stopped taking her calls. Under most circumstances this would be the end of the story - with the millionaire ballplayer getting to keep Chandra's jacket. But ************.com wouldn't let that happen. We contacted officials from the New York Knicks, the San Antonio Spurs and the National Basketball Association, and demanded answers. A representative for the Spurs told ************.com that the team is withholding comment on this incident until they conduct their own investigation. The NBA and the NY Knicks have yet to respond. Butler averaged just 5.3 points per game last year in a very disappointing season with the NY Knicks. And last month the Knicks decided that they'd seen enough of the young forward - shipping him off to the San Antonio Spurs, where he's likely to ride the bench.
This is a GREAT move! A comendable job by Morey. This guy is talented, tough, and savy. Wow, great move. We have our PF for years now. This guy will control the paint and Yao will extend to the high post, where coach A wants him. His court vision is better there.
Yeah I'm really excited about this deal. Pretty much everyone else on Luis' championship team is in the NBA right now doing fairly well...
Our bro Clutch reported it...thats all that matters. http://clutchfans.net/news/1426/rockets_trade_spanoulis_for_scola/ By Clutch Copyright 2007 ClutchFans.net The Rockets have traded Vassilis Spanoulis, a second round pick and cash to the San Antonio Spurs for the rights to Argentine power forward Luis Scola and 6-foot-10 center Jackie Butler. ClutchFans has confirmed with a league source that the deal is as reported, though the Rockets can not mention it until 9pm Central time tonight. The pick given up by Houston will be a 2009 second-rounder. The league source also confirmed to ClutchFans that the Rockets plan to have Scola on the team this season. Scola is one of the most NBA-ready big men in Europe and has been for a few seasons now. Complications with a buyout in 2005 kept him from joining the Spurs. The 6-foot-9, 230-pounder was named to the 2005-06 and 2006-07 All-Euroleague First Team and was a member of the Argentinean National Team, along with the Spurs Manu Ginobili, that won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games. Scola averaged 15.5 points (57.6% shooting) and 5.9 rebounds in just over 26 minutes a night for Tau Ceramica last season. When I first heard of this trade I was floored. Yet another trade by Rockets GM Daryl Morey where the potential reward is very high and the cost is very low. This is nothing but a possible win for the Rockets, and Scola will hopefully be lured by the idea of coming to a strong team that needs a player at his position. Scola also just turned 27 years old, so he joins a core of Yao Ming (almost 27 years old), Tracy McGrady (28) and Shane Battier (28), all at roughly the same age. (More coming)
So the Rockets get two young big men with lots of potential for a grumpy turnover-prone guard who may never play a game in the NBA again? That's got to be one of the biggest steals the Rockets have gotten in a long time. I'm interested to see how they'll fit in with the Rockets.
Here's the one part of the article where Feigen has misinformation or is speculating without understanding the CBA: "Morey said the deal does not in any change the Rockets' intentions to sign both Chuck Hayes and Dikembe Mutombo, though with the little room likely left in the mid-level exception, the Rockets could try to sign Mutombo for the veteran's minimum." Mutombo has played for the Rockets for three consecutive seasons, so we have his Bird rights. We can resign him for whatever we want, up to the max salary. Of course we wouldn't offer anywhere close to that, and the luxury tax threshold of $67.865 million is potential limiting factor, depending on if we waive Sura or trade him for another salary. Even if we didn't have his Bird rights, we could give him up to a 10% raise on his salary from last year of $2.2 million without having to touch the MLE.
I am going to guess hoops ----- world Edit: nope that didn't work.. try searching for the title of the article to see if you can find it. Edit 2: media ---- takeout
