There have been a few of these threads started and I have probably done most of them, but here goes anyway... I'm in Arlington Texas and there is a Bennigan's right next to my hotel, my favorite dish there is the Kilkenny's Chicken Salad. I ordered it without looking at a menu and this white female bartender says with an attitude as if she's seen my "type" before, "That salad isn't 4.99 anymore". As if I was going to send it back after I learned it was 2 dollars more. Immediately she tried to backtrack and started to explain to me how she has to explain that to 'some people'. I almost flew off the handle but decided to walk away. Before I left, I shared the story with her manager, he apologized and offered to give me the salad for free. I thanked him and told him that I would be uncomfortable eating there. Was I a victim of racism or collateral damage?
Overreacting and you didn't have enough evidence to know if she was being racist. Maybe she's gotten sick of people telling her to give it to them for $4.99 after getting the bill, and those were the "some people" - the ones that argued with her that she's tired of.
I agree you overreacted. Waitstaff put up with a lot of stuff on a daily basis and I don't doubt the new price surprised some people. Maybe she could have been more polite about informing you. Way back when, Luther's Ranch House salads used to be $3.99 and they suddenly raised the price by about $1.50. It caught me off guard the first time and I kidded the waitstaff about the price increase. I stopped going to Luther's.
It depends how she said it........ You were there AB, if she said it with Tude...then you did the right thing.... I still would have accepted the free salad.... I mean we are talking about your favorite salad....FREE....not $4.99, not $4.99.....FREE...... DD
Is it possible that your "type" is people that ordered that item without looking at the menu and seeing the new price?
According to some people here, you are less likely to tip anyway so the waitress was merely enacting a PRS (pre-emptive racist strike.) She probably could have handled that better. If it makes you feel any better, she might have gotten fired and judging from the excess number of people in the service industry, she might join the poverty class in a few months.
as what they said in Clerks 2 "Baby, you can't put a price on racism!" as for what you did, i agree with DD, it depends how she said it I hate it when I get ugly looks when I walk to the bar, as if I am underage, I AM FREAKING TWENTY FIVE DAMMIT....
It's likely that someone came in before you and threw a temper tantrum because they WEREN'T told ahead of time about the price change. Being that you didn't even look at the menu, the waitress may have assumed that you fit the bill of someone who routinely bought the special deal in the past.
I remember when Whoppers were 99 cents each, for a long time. I didn't know at first that it was actually a special price. It eventually went back up. I should have told them I was going back to Wendy's.
