Mihm showed an inability to get open on a consistent basis and foul trouble held him to 15 pts and 6 boards. The Texas guards have shown a lack of ability to pass the ball over fronts. Oklahoma could only foul once Mihm touched the ball. Funniest moment of the night was Najera went for a layup, saw Mihm, lost all coordination and missed a layup bad. The refs then nailed Mihm with a foul even though he pulled away before contact. Najera excelled on the offensive end scoring 28 by getting to the line at will and making 2 of 3 3pointers. Najera only scored two points in the first 11 minutes of the second half while UT pulled away. The big flaw in Najera's game was defense. Mouneke scored 30 points as he was able to post up and beat Najera off the dribble. Najera won't be able to play SF in the NBA if he plays weak defense like last night on a consistent basis.
I beg your pardon JoeJoe. Defense may be his best trait. Oklahoma doesn't have the big men to compete with Texas. In the game last night I saw Muoneke make so many prayers it's not even funny. He did have a great game, but he won't do again against Oklahoma. Oklahoma is tradtionally his worst game of the year. Last year and the year before he struggled to score 10 points against Eduardo. Considering the talent of the players around Najera I think he had a great game. Muoneke has the luxury of a legit center while Eduardo has role players around him. I consider Eduardo's performance more impressive than Gabe's. By the way, the rematch is in Norman on Jan. 31 in ESPN.
I was at the game last night and I was surprised by the way Oklahoma played. Oklahoma did not look like a one loss team. Texas has better players and it showed throughout the game. Muoneke played a great game and showed that he can be counted on when Mihm is not having a great game. All Oklahoma could do was foul Mihm. Speaking of Najera, he is Oklahoma. Without him the score would have been much worse. Najera kept Oklahoma in the game and showed that he can score just like Muoneke. The two players cancelled each other out but in the end the more talented team won. Even if this game was played in Norman, Texas still would have won if Oklahoma played the way they did last night. Texas dominated the second half and pulled away. [This message has been edited by Smokey (edited January 16, 2000).]
Neither team has impressed me much this year. I think they're both quality teams... but for a group of guys talking about a final four appearance at the beginning of the year? I don't see it happening.
Oklahoma is better than they were last night, and their home-court is a huge thing for them. They rarely lose at home and I don't expect them to lose at home at all this year. On Najera being all they've got, well to an extent he is all they've got. Oklahoma is a team built around one star player with role players. He is the star and their Guards are 3-point shooters while their centers are bangers and rebounders. Their 3-point shooting is way better than that, they were leading the Big 12 last time I checked in 3pt shooting, but they had an off night from the guard position. An interesting quote from Gabe Muoneke on his performance: "That was God doing that tonight." I'm para-phrasing, but that's what he said. OU 78-TU 65 in the rematch.
I'd take Cato or Miller or anyone else for that matter being "held" to just 15 points. This game was Mihm's worst by far, and he still managed 15 points. What a crappy player.
Yeah, those dunks and 15-foot jump shots... lucky Gabe! I don't buy the argument that because Gabe didn't play well against OU last year, he won't do it this year either. He is a better player than he was a year ago. Cincinnati will be very surprised to hear this. Do they have to give back the game they won at the Lloyd Noble Center, a few weeks ago? Funny how that happened on the same night they were playing the Big 12's best defensive team (statistically speaking). I'm not trying to pick on you, SooneRockStro, but you should fire your fact-checker. (Whoops. Misunderstood that first one.) [This message has been edited by BrianKagy (edited January 17, 2000).]
Man you Texas fans are all the same. I myself am in a very interesting predicament concerning my allegience to either Oklahoma or Texas; I was born in Beamont but I have lived in OKC for almost all my life..... Therefor I always am partial to my Sooners. However it is quite comical for me to deal with Longhorn fans. When it comes to basketball you guys are just pathetic. When was the last time you guys even made it past the 2nd round? or first for that matter. And recruiting? The Sooners have JR Raymond and Hollis Price, two great guards. I don't know or care who Texas has because in a few years they woln't even be mentioned, unless being compared to their carbon copy Baylor in the future. About the game?? Texas won fair and square, I have no excuses for the Sooners, the Longhorns at this point are a better team but OU has the better coach and he will make the right ajustments to lead them to a victory next meeting! GO SOONERS!!!! --Rocketman *Props to SoonerRockStro for trying to stand up against these Horn fans*
OU has the better coach - I think you forgot that the guy at Texas is Rick Barnes. I don't really care to compare coaches, but let's compare schedules. OU fans think they're all that cause they were 14-1, playing a scrubby team schedule. They were killed in their only real game vs. Cincinnati. Texas on the other hand came in with 4 tough losses to top 25 teams and 2 huge wins versus the elite in college basketball. Sure Texas may not have made the sweet sixteen since the Tom Penders era but they are headed in the right direction more so than OU. You play the elite to be considered one of the elite. Texas has a higher RPI rating than OU even with more losses. Why? Cause they don't back down from competition and that is why they will be more successful in the tournament than OU. I hope you OU fans were at the game last night but if not this cheers for u: Give em hell, Give em hell, OU SUCKS!!!! Sucks in football, sucks in basketball, at least we can all agree to being Rockets fans.
Actually the last time UT made it past the 2nd round in the NCAA tournament was in the 1997 with Reggie Freeman. They got knocked out of the sweet 16 by Louisville. By the way the highlight of my basketball career was beating Wayne McGarity down court and getting the assist from Freeman in a pick up game. Actually that one time I played around the world at the end of the 3rd quarter in a Rockets-Sonics game in '96 ranks pretty high too. Anyways all of this UT-OU allegiance is making me sick.
What I meant was OU won't lose any at home the rest of the way. Sorry for the mistake. I do believe Gabe Muoneke put up some prayers, did you not see him make all those shots with three players in his face? Muoneke even admits he put up some prayers with his post game comments. Mihm sucks period. To those saying Mihm is the real deal, I would re-consider after his sub-par game against OU's weak big men. Actually OU beat Arkansas at Arkansas(only fifth team in last five years in non-conference to do it), California(they beat one of those top ten Pac-10 teams, Arizona maybe), they beat Mississippi(they beat one of those top 10 SEC teams). They haven't played cupcakes like you suggested. I believe Miss. is like 12-4 or something and Cal is an up and coming team. This arguement will go on and on and on, so I think I'll stop right there.
Sigh... it's a slow enough day. I guess I'll answer some flame mail... No, you're thinking of Texas A&M fans. So, what's the interesting predicament...? Beamont... is that in the Goden Trangle? We think so too. That's why we're laughing. That's not very nice. Especially since you're talking to fans of the 1999 Big 12 Champions. I think it was back when you guys had a real football program. We made the Elite 8 in 1990. This is pretty odd smack coming from a fan of a team that had lost five consecutive first-round games before last season. Let me turn that one around on you... when was the last time Oklahoma won a Big 12 championship? ...because you don't want to hear people like Dick Vitale or Andy Katz saying that Texas has one of the five best incoming recruiting classes in America. One thing about Texas-- we're always mentioned whether good or bad. Let's compare, unless you have an aversion to factual evidence: RICK BARNES (from TexasSports.com) Barnes has compiled a 221-147 (.601) record in 12 seasons as a head coach at George Mason, Providence, Clemson and Texas. Along the way, he has guided his teams to a total of seven NCAA and three National Invitation Tournaments. KELVIN SAMPSON (from SoonerSports.com) Sampson...holds a 279-203 (.579) career record (and) has led the Sooners to a pair of 22-11 marks and second-place Big 12 Conference finishes the last two years. Sampson is also one of just two current Big 12 coaches (Kansas' Roy Williams is the other) to lead his team to five straight appearances in the "Big Dance" (where they have compiled a record of 2-5-- ed). I don't know how you can claim that Oklahoma has a superior coach. Both Barnes and Sampson look like outstanding young coaches who are capable of great things in the future. Now, that was my response as a Texas fan. This is my response as an administrator: this is not the forum for a long discussion on Texas vs. Oklahoma in basketball. The reason this thread exists here is because both schools have a player (Mihm, Najera) who a lot of Rocket fans would like to see added to our roster. Let's try to stay on topic, please? ------------------ "Mr. Zherkov, I want you to know I detest phrases, phrasemongers, and pinched waists...I hate smut, and I hate people who relish smut. Particularly the latter! ...I love truth, sincerity, and honesty...I love ideas, Monsieur Zherkov; I love true comradeship, on an equal footing... but, after all, why not? I'll drink to your health too!" Dostoevsky, Notes from Underground
I dont want to see Mihm playing for the Rockets and I dont want to see Eduardo Najera. Lets not waiste a pick.. Both guys will not be anything big in the NBA.
