How do you go about getting dead bolts put in your doors? I'd try it myself but I'm afraid I'd screw my doors up. How do you find a good locksmith or anyone else who does that kind of work? I asked at Home Depot but they said I had to buy the door there.
Before you go hiring anyone, ask some handyman type friends you might have. If not, just follow the directions. It's really not that hard, and hardware stores usually have drills and bits that you can put a deposit down, take them home, use them, bring them back, and get money back. Really it's not that bad.

You can do it yourself. All you need is a screwdriver. You may need a chisel if the strike plate needs to be moved on the jamb, but you can always use a flat head screwdriver and hammer for that. Process : 1. remove old lock (remove two set screws from inside of door. pull lock apart. Remove bolt assembly set screws, remove bolt assembly.) 2. install new bolt assembly. remember to look for "this side up" on assembly. 3. install lock sides. use two set screws (included) to attach the sides, set screws on the inside of the door (duh). 4. test lock operation with key. 5. curse, as bolt no longer aligns with strike plate on door jamb. 6. adjust strike plate to align with bolt. 7. enjoy cold one.
if you have existing deadbolts, you just replace them... it's super easy... shoot, I DID IT!?!?! Now, if you have never had deadbolts and you have to drill a hole, etc... I would definately find a handyman, a locksmith will do it but it might cost more.
Drilling the hole isn't so hard. You just get a hole saw. That's a drill bit attachment that is a metal circle with teeth. You drill a pilot hole at the center with a regular bit, then use the hole saw. Squeeze the trigger, saw starts cutting. There's usually a template in the lock kit that sez how far away from the edge of the door to drill the hole.
I want to install 3. One for the front, rear and garage door. I guess I could try the door to the garage first so if I screw it up it won't be as big of a deal.
If your home hasn't been burglarized, you probally don't need them. Like some other posters said, if your just replacing the current locks, it's very simple. Almost as simple as settig up a home theater system.

As I mentioned 4 years ago...I'd like to put 3 deadbolt locks on 3 different doors. Can I buy 3 that will use the same key?
