Whats with these trade battier threads. He does everything for us. Shoots the 3, rebounds, defends, takes charges, steals, blocks. Great team player. Hes the type of player that can turn a really good team into a championship team.
That has yet to be seen. The man just won his first playoff game this year. He's never been past the first round either.
Battier has the intangibles. Every championship team seems to have a Battier type and it seems those kinds of players are harder and harder to find. He is a valuable asset for that reason.
It's funny reading comments about how Battier's D is supposely overrated because Kobe had a couple of 50+ point games against him. In one of his 53 point games, he took 44 shots and 14 FT atttempts to get those 53 points... and his team lost. His other 50 pt game was a pretty efficient good game. But that happens, it's Kobe Bryant. He's had huge games against defenders from Battier to Artest to Bowen to Bell. He's Kobe Bryant for a reason. But look at Kobe's season stats vs. the Rockets. He had two big scoring games, one of which was actually efficient, the other one he just took a ton of shots. His other two games vs. the Rockets were 6 for 18 for 20 points and 8 for 26 for 23 points. For the season, he averaged 37 ppg vs. the Rockets, but his season FG% vs. Rockets is 39.7%. His TS% vs. the Rockets was an underwhelming 50%. Some people have such myopic minds.

Battier rebounds less, and gets half as many assists. Walton turns the ball over more but he is the one that initiates the offense when the ball isn't in Kobe's hands. Battier is a better defender and draws charges. The point I'm trying to make is that I think Battier is overrated on this board. He is good but not untouchable. He is a borderline starter for a good team like Mario Elie was and we should be open to trading him if it bags us a legitimate starter and real 3rd option behind Yao and TMac.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why real scouts and GMs get paid money to do what they do, and fantasy bball players don't.

Actually Battier and Walton are not all that different caliber of players, both are real good role players who ideally are about your 4th best player. Battier is better defensively, Walton is better offensively and rebounds better. I think both players are better on their current team than they would be on the other team. The Lakers would not give up Walton easily and neither would we give up Battier easily. But neither is untouchable.
Battier would be better on the Lakers, under Phil Jackson, in the Triangle than Luke Walton. Battier's offense in the Triangle would be better than Luke Walton. Phil Jackson would ask Daryl Morey to be his best man if he as much as suggested trading Battier for Luke Walton. If you don't understand that, you sir, cannot recognize basketball talent.
I am not sure about this. Walton is the superior/more creative decision maker, better inside/cutting and a better rebounder (O and D). Battier is the better spot 3 shooter and defender. Maybe Jackson would spring for a Battier-Walton trade, but I think you underrate what Walton does for them in what the Lakers run. Modest upgrade for them at best. Now Battier is much better for us, definetly.
Battier needs to be kept plain and simple, he averaged 10 points a game just by shooting threes. with adelman to open up the offense i dont see why he couldnt average in the 13-15 range...
And another one was a double overtime game (which I attended, his 53 point game) where everyone piles up stats. Kobe came out scorching but then went ice cold from the field for almost half the game, part of that being that Battier beared down on D and made it more difficult for Kobe. Van Gundy even said he was fine with the defense for the game. & it took every ounce of Kobe Bryant's ability, grit & heart to get those points. If it was someone less of a man than Kobe (like Vince Carter) they'da "only" gone for 39-43 that night. (I wish they'da given us the straight Kobe vs McGrady matchup but they hardly ever do that in the NBA.)
Battier is pretty much a finished product athletically, true. I do think he's gotten to be purely intangibles guy on any team he's on, and is in a bit of a "comfort zone" offensively. Its considered somewhat a bonus if Shane contributes offensively, not the expectation. He's not gonna take anyone off a dribble, but if they say Shane you're be needed to contribute more on offense, stop chasing loose balls and guards around, I think (maybe) he can get you 12-13 points a game because he's coachable and has the work ethic and dedication to work on his game. Put it this way - for a "he's what he is" player I'd bet my money on Battier making more shots in a game & improving his offensive productivity than Rafer Alston.
sasha pavlovic is good but i'd rather have shane battier any day. he brings great defense, great hustle...and he can shoot he brings those things everygame sasha pavlovic only brings energy...not great at anything if i would get anybody that i would trade battier for that would be shawn marion shawn marion+jalen rose=shane battier+rafer alston
Would you guys do a Battier for Maggette swap? I would be real interested in something like that. I don't know if the money would match but if you could throw in V-Span or something.
Nope, for no other reason than Maggette is a Ewing-factor player. His team always plays better without him regardless of his individual success.
You want to trade Battier for a guy who said "my offense is my defense" yet he is an average offensive player.
