Legendary Houston newsman Marvin Zindler is suffering from inoperable pancreatic cancer.

Zindler, who turns 86 on Aug. 10, said in a report filed for Channel 13's 6 p.m. newscast Thursday that he has pancreatic cancer that has spread to his liver.

"I don't want anybody to feel sorry for me because I'm almost 86 years old," said Zindler, who looked wan and tired in the report.

Despite the news, the consumer affairs reporter — who has worked for KTRK for 35 years and has a lifetime contract with the station — said he planned on filing reports as usual, beginning Friday with his weekly "rat and roach" restaurant report.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men and the fifth most common in women in the United States. Another beloved Houston newsman, Sylvan Rodriguez, died of the disease in 2000.

Zindler has endured prostate cancer and two heart bypass surgeries, not to mention many plastic surgeries.

Zindler died years ago. I heard if he looks into a mirror he turns into dust.

    Good guy though.

Pancreatic cancer? Oh man...that is not good.

I hope he goes without much pain.

When this man goes, it's going to be a Houston legend passing. He lived a pretty good life, and he seems content. Good luck Marvin - I always enjoyed watchin' ya on Channel 13. :(

I hope I'm working at 86. It is sad knowing it is inevitable.

According to a good friend of mine (he's an MD), Marvin likely has no more than a few weeks left. Probably won't last past the summer.

I respect the man for doing what he did for so long, and remaining as passionate about his job now as he's always been. He's a true Houston icon.

    Best of luck, Mr. Zindler...

Damn. Marvin's been around forever. I've been living away from Houston for 27 years now, and whenever we visit, and my Mom has the tube on, it seems like Marvin's there, doin' his thing, and frozen in some time capsule. Glad he's hanging in there. Good luck, Marvin.

I can't believe that guy is still on tv working -- I thought he had retired (or died) years ago.

I remember about 10-15 years ago Dave Ward ribbing Marvin on the air about his many plastic surgeries. Marvin would take it in stride and didn't seem bothered by it. Ward showed an altered picture of Marvin depicting how Marvin would have looked had he not had any plastic surgery... wow... that was scary. :D

In 1980, Marvin Zindler was the Grandmarshall for my high school's homecoming parade. As he was passing me and my friends, one of them shouted "The food in our cafeteria ain't good enough for rats to eat!"

Marvin looked at us, smiled, and said "Write me a letter."

ABC/Disney (13's parent company) is in the process of building an animatronic robot like those you see at Disney World in his likeness. He'll always be around.

I thought Marvin Zindler WAS a robot? Or at least a cyborg. He wears those dark glasses to hide the little red LED lights in his eye sockets...
