I've been talking about this in the chat for a while now, so I thought I'd post this for some of you that don't come to the chat that often. This season will be finished, and we'll have a season 4 champion. But after that, it's up in the air. I am really considering moving to NBA Live 2002, and starting again, with each of us getting the same teams. The sim we have going now is fun, but at the same time unfortunately can get stale. It's virtually the same teams competing for the title every year, but the main problem is no draft or free agency. Rookies are really fun, and I want to be able to them more than once per calendar year.

Under NBA Live 2002, as I understand it, there are new rookies created every year, with scouting reports, and a form of free agency. It is also easier on me, since there is actually a draft order created and I don't actually have to place them one by one on individual rosters. I do not completely understand the free agency yet, but if it is good, it would take away the need for a common draft, or at least make it just one round.

Here's the best information I've found:

Ok I'll try my best to explain it... in the Draft you start out with your draft position so the winning team is last etc.. The teams that did not make the playoffs go into a lottery for the drafting position... each team has different odds of getting drawn in the lottery depending on where they finnished on the ladder... So the team that finnished last has the best chance (I think 1 in 25) of being drawn for first pick...

While this lottery is going on you can also see a description of how good the rookies are in the draft.. (like "Very strong", "Average" etc..)

Once all the teams have their draft pick position the draft begins.. you have a list of all the rookies sorted in order of their expected pick... so you have the rookie who is expected to be drafted first at the top.. then the 2nd rookie... I think it does a top 5.. then the players have next to them the round they are expected to be drafted... so you have "early first round","first round", "late first round", "early second round" etc.... So when it is your pick you can pick any player that has not already been picked... on the right hand side it shows a list of players that have been picked, who they were picked by, what their expected pick was and what position they were actually picked... etc... So from the list you select the player you want to pick and you can click a button to read their scouting report.. the report gives you an indicator of the potential of the rookie (ie good, excellent, poor etc...) and you get information on what the rookie is good at and what they are poor at... (ie has good rebounding skills, strong in key, excellent at dunking but poor range, can't dribble or pass.. )

If you decide to pick the rookie you select "pick" and you have the rookie. Or you can choose to waive your pick and go to "next pick".. (don't know why you would do this???) anyway the draft goes through 2 rounds.. and then you get to sign and release players that are on your roster whos contracts are up... some players may refuse to sign unless you make them the right offer... or may refuse to sign no matter what you offer them... once you have signed and released players you go to the free agents pool where you can pick up players on the free agents list... again players may refuse to sign unless you offer them the right deal... or may not want to join your team at all... once you have signed any free agents you begin the season and you can re-order your rosters... when signing players you are resrticted by a points cap... better players cost more points each year you get a higher cap...

Hope that all makes sense and answers what you wanted to know

What do you guys think about this? If we did this, I would give everyone their same teams, and we would start over with the rosters as they were on opening day. I'm fine with continuing this sim instead, but I just think it would be a little more competitive and fun on the 2002 version with new rookies and free agency each year. Let me know what you think...

with the same rosters as the NBA or the rosters we have now? I assume the NBA.

Sounds cool to me either way, but if we are going to do this, why don't we speed up this season and get it over with. Don't need a whole lot of stats or experiments if we are just going to switch over.

I don't really like the common draft and always wanted a real rookie draft. Do players retire, get old, and suck too?

I support the move to the new game and don't mind having the Pacers again. I'm excited about having a rookie draft every season and interested in the "points cap" free agency system.

    DC,

I want the Rockets-- only other team I'd consider taking would be Milwaukee. :)

Anyway, I will start a thread for that, if the idea is ok with everyone. All GMs do have first opportunity at their old teams, but trading teams is fine. For example, I know nomar was talking last night about moving from the Grizzlies, and haven from the Knicks, etc. It is also likely that we may take out a couple of the inactive GMs from this sim (some teams that come to mind are the Nuggets, Heat, Cavs, etc.), because there are two people that aren't currently in the game but want to join or re-join when we start over. (mduke and BGM)

If we do this idea, and it seems like most support it, I will sim the rest of the season at a faster pace. I won't sim it all in one day, but maybe 7-8 games per session, etc.

I'm not going to be the cav's if I have start out with their crappy roster again. I think a draft would be fair. Otherwise you have the same problem. Lakers dominating. I already see that as stale for over half of us who have crappy teams.

Didn't know you were still out there PSJ...

Anyway, I assumed you weren't that interested in the Cavs... I will give you first shot at a better team once one opens up, but right now I'm not sure if anyone else wants to leave. The problem with the domination of the last few sims was the original draft that we had, which raped the 12 or so unclaimed teams...

I'll be the Cav's. I just wanted to make the point that now I'm going from having Vince Carter to having what? Basically nothing. Andre Miller, but nothing else. So now I've got to start all over again from scratch with a bunch of average junk. While the rest of you get Kobes, Franchise's, and Iverson's. I'm for having some more parity, but about half of us aren't going to get it with this move. We're going to get squatted on again. We basically get thrown back into the frying pan. If you had a draft every single team in the league would have the same starting point. I think that's fair. I put in my time to get Vince Carter. Now I've got to start all over again at the whim of this league. Like I said, I'll be the Cav's, but why are you doing this to me? It's like a punishment.

    PSJ,
I want the Cavs. Do you want the Sonics? I kind of like the Cavs roster.

You had Vince Carter, but practically no depth at other spots, plus other teams won't be near as loaded...

Anyway, all I can tell you is that it will be like the real NBA, so you should have a chance. Even if your team isn't good, you can get a couple of great rookies and then have a shot. Or you can trade salary, and sign players in free agency. However, if you are uncomfortable with either of these options (which didn't exist under the old sim), you can always post in my other thread and say you want to swap teams. I know DC wants to move from the Spurs, BGM might from Seattle, Zac from Utah, haven from New York... there are other opportunities. If you want to change, post in the other thread and perhaps someone will trade.
