I like Brian Skinner. He's always played decent defense and I think he's played under Adelman before.
Sure let's throw big bucks at Mikki Moore, who had a great playoff series. And Amir Johnson, who had a few highlight games, but I guess that's the best we can do because we couldn't address any needs through the draft.
lets say we trade for a starting pf like shelden williams or ike diogu. to back him up, personally id like to sign someone like a joe smith, marc jackson, lawrence roberts or melvin ely. then have landry as a third string or backup depending on how well he's progressing. i really think we should look at options other than chuck hayes. i love his fight and attitude but the guy is small and has no offense. am i the only one that thinks this?
Great, now Feigan is on the bandwagon. He wrote a piece on his blog about Amir. link Anyways, What's wrong with taking a chance on a young PF like Johnson. He was drafted in 2005, and hasn't gotten a chance to showcase his skills too much because of how deep Detroit is at that spot. The kid has talent, as apparent by his monster numbers he had in the D-League. He'd be a perfect compliment to Yao. Johnson wouldn't eat up alot of paint but rather give you the rebounding and blocks you would come to expect from a long athletic 4 that can fly and posseses great mobility while allowing Yao to still control the low block when warrented. He also shoots well from the FT line and has range out to 3pt. A 4 spot manned by Johnson, Landry, and Hayes is already better than what we had last year(Howard and Hayes), and we still had limited sucess. Howard never gave us anything besides the occasional jumper from midrange, which is why he was yanked from his starting role from the beginning, replaced by a 6-6 rookie with no range and no hops. Signing Amir Johnson to an offersheet could embolden our rookie frontoffice and create more of a buzz than we had last year when we signed Bonzi. Johnson and Landry could be our PF's for years to come.
Amir Johnson could be everything Stromile Swift was supposed to be. Or he could be the second coming of what Swift ended up being. However, the kid has the potential to be the perfect complement to Yao. That is something that cannot be said, unequivocally, for journeymen like Joe Smith, Brian Skinner, Mikki Moore, et. al. I would rathe trust Detroit's scouting & braintrust, especially over Houston's. Spend the money on Amir Johnson.
I like this idea, I like it alot! Youth is the direction the Rockets should move, not always old vets on the verge of extinction. (that is why I was so fired up about the draft) I am tired of that approach. Let the coach develop some players. Honestly, we are not like on the threshold of greatness. What was the most exciting feature of last season's NBA? Golden State. Surprises are fun.
I would love Webber on our team. Old, but he knows the offense and is good for 25 minutes of the bench every game. Would bolster the bench and improve the team
Amir Johnson is worth the gamble. He will have to go through a rough time because he is somewhat raw but I don't think he will quit unlike Stro. He has genuine talent and Detroit will fight to prevent him from leaving.
I'm just curious. What about Troy Murphy? He's got a big contract which is a negative, but he's only 27, rebounds, and can shoot it. Maybe Indy would like to be rid of his contract in a trade of Rafer, Sura, Snyder. Works in Realgm. This way we can keep Battier and move one of the guards. Thoughts!
This thread has a little more life so I'll drop this idea one more time : What if we got Magloire and Frye and Rudy Fernandez from Portland for Battier and Sura and Brooks? That's one of each type of pf - both 6'11. Frye is a 245lb jump shooter, Magloire is a 260 lb rebounder. We get the draft pick we really wanted in Fernandez. Portland gets a local speedster for backup pg. Portland wants Battier. They have a hole at sf and they need some vet glue. If we get Magloire and Frye in S&T, then we can still use the MLE. We keep total dollars in line for les. Yao/Magloire Magloire/Frye/Hayes Tmac/Novak Wells/Snyder James/Alston/Vspan I still want to move some of our spare pieces for better guards.

My top choice is Amir Johnson. But that's only because this free agent class is not that great. Get Amir Johnson at 4 million, give the rest to a veteran big man like joe smith. I don't think the Pistons will match because of what Billups will make...and if they do match, the Rockets need to contact Billups to see if they can work something out (the Lewis fantasy is thankfully over, it's time for the Billups one). If Joe Smith won't take the 1.5-2 million dollar offer, trade any of those PGs with 'potential' and/or Luther Head for a veteran power forward and use the left over MLE to sign a small forward/shooting guard hybrid. OR Try and trade Battier, Head, future 2nd round pick for Haslem. Then, use the full MLE on Nocioni.
I know..to me, Battier is the 3rd most untouchable. But if Nocioni can be had for the full MLE, I think he'd ease the pain from losing Battier a little bit. It would suck so hard for Miami to lose Haslem, too. But Battier has proven that he could play with a superstar wingman and a superstar center. The real question in the Battier for Haslem scenario is if the free agent market for swingmen is better than the market for big men. If you can get a better swingman with the MLE, you try to do the Battier trade. If you feel that the big man market is better, get your big man with the MLE. My biggest concern is depth...I'd like to add to the team rather than change it. Which is why I would prefer adding Amir Johnson and another veteran power forward. then the rockets would still have the LLE and more guards to trade away for more depth at a certain position like small forward.
