How long can team keep a 2nd round pick out of the league. I ask because say another team likes Badiane and feels that he's ready, but the Rockets don't (and have his draft rights), how long can the Rockets hold on to that right, do they have the power to indefinitely keep a player out of the L if they don't feel that he's ready?
That is a great question, I think they hold their rights in perpetuity...right? But at some point if the player believes he is ready, they should be able to force the issue. DD
hmm hom many year by now Spurs own rights to Luis Scola? just checked - 5. 56 SA Luis Scola ............ F 6-9 230 4/30/80 Spain and i read from some paper last year : Scola was upset - he wanted to come and play in NBA, but Spurs didnt let him and he cann't play for some other team also (in NBA) 'cause Spus want retain his rights.
They hold the rights indefinitely as long as the player is playing professional basketball somewhere. If the player decides to not play anywhere for 3 years (I think 3 anyway) then he becomes a free agent.
Wow, I think that's going to be something that's going to be challenged in a few years, if I was Scola I would sue. I think the more fair way of doing things is that a player can declare he's NBA ready, and the team has up to 3 years to offer him a NBA contract.
But, most second rounders can probably ask for a trade and be accommodated if the team holding his rights doesn't think he's going to be all that great. Scola is an exception. I'm sure the Rockets would trade Badiane's rights to another team if that team wanted to bring him over.
Not true. The spurs have tried to bring him over last year, but couldn't negotiate a buyout with his European team. So the ended up signing Oberto instead.
