The New York Yankees is such a misnomer. They need a nickname indicative of how big of pests they are and how almost impossible it is to stomp them out. That baseball team could probably survive a nuclear war, drought and ice age at the same time. The only appropriate nickname for them is the New York Cockroaches.

Even being a total anti-Cockroaches fan, I have to admit the Paul O'neil chant last night was one of the passionate, coolest and classiest sports related events I have ever seen. Still have to hope RJ and Schilling, the best the Orkin man has to offer, is enough to get the job done.

this thread reminds me of the days of yore when the rockets were winning their second championship and a commentator on NBC called them nuclear cockroaches that can't be eliminated.

i went to a couples' wedding shower last night for a friend from high school. a lot of my old friends were there and we were talking about the yankees. i made the point, and a few agreed, that i had not seen any team ever make a playoff run the way the Yanks are doing this season and the way the Rocks did in 95. both were entirely professional...both teams were on the verge of elimination constantly...both teams responded with their backs to the wall...both teams were quiet and business-like in their approach. just something to think about.
