Landry=? BTW, the reasons why some wanted these guys is because we look at the positives in a player and not just their negatives. You can point out the negatives of every player in the draft and make them look bad... Oden= Didn't dominate college ball, doesn't score well, cannot shoot... Durant= Too skinny, can't bench 185 lbs, not going to be able to do in the pros what he did in college, etc... Sound familiar?
One can only hope he's like Millsap, but I'm not holding my breath, I'd rather be pleasantly surprised. I'm not saying Morey did a good job on draft day, but I'm certainly not going to go into super panic mode yet! Everyone can write of Morey as the greatest idiot in the world, but honestly I've been pretty happy with his trades thus far. I liked that we got Snyder for nothing, I liked the Battier trade and I liked the James for Howard trade. We all know he's got something left. Its not about giving him another chance, its about being realistic. The off-season has barely begun and people are writing it off like its over. If we start the season with our team looking like it is right now, I'll be the first one to jump on the Morey sucks bandwagon - but there's a lot of off-season left...I'll refrain from calling Morey a total idiot until all is said and done.
Morey is Danny Ainge's protege. Take a look at what Ainge has done, now you understand what Morey would do.
Wow, I think everyone is over reacting. Have we forgot that we had to select #26 and not #6 or even #16? It's not like we had a Greg Oden at our laps and passed on him. We picked low in the draft where anything can be a hit or miss. If we messed up on a lottery pick, then I'd understand the commotion. But all this backlash over a late 1st rounder and a couple 2nd round picks?
Guys like Brooks are sliders because of height, not because of talent. I don't see anything wrong with the pick. Remember Luther Head? WE DRAFTED HIM KNOWING HIM AS AN UNDERSIZED SG. It turned out to be a value pick. The same goes with Brooks. Go Go Agent 0! Prove the doubters wrong!
Morey is just playing it safely. 2 years from now, he can't get criticized for having his picks turn out to be busts, because his picks are already busts. He's starting from a low point, so things can only get better from here on.
Then he should have used the pick combined with players/picks to get the right trade on ONE decent player. He picked three players and all have the upside to be scrubs. I hope I am wrong for our team's sake!! If Morey goes on it could look like preparations for the second Titanic!
adelman said he really liked aaron brooks. I don't get why all the blame is on morey lol. And aaron brooks looks extremely quick and can drive in and score. No guard for the rockets can do that last year...even tmac struggled doing that. and dont compare him to john lucas pls...the only similarity is height. WHy don't u guys compare yi jianlian and yao together because they are both chinese centers. duhhh
Morey was going to draft on who he thought was the best available player at 26. Someone said that only 20% of picks drafted this low actually turn out to be rotation players. So chances are that the PFs we could have drafted turn out to be bust. What we had during the JVG era was a total lack of talent on the rockets, we weren't the most talented team on most nights but won with consistent defense every night, so when we faced the more talented teams like dalllas, SA, or Phoenix we usually lost. When you draft for need, you usually have to draft players that are lower on your draft board since you pass up players that dont fit for your need and drafting at 26 is already low enough. Drafting the best available player on the board gives the best chances of increasing the talent level on the the team and thats never a bad thing.
Presuming to know more about the draft talent than any NBA GM is sheer lunacy. Proclaiming the draft to be blown in "a MAJOR way", a draft which we came in with the 26th pick, and picked up two additional 2nd rounders for cash and a future second, before any player steps foot on the court is just laughable.
This is exactly the way I feel. People act like Morey gave up on sure things but anyone who follows the draft closely knows that no one projected these college studs to do anything meaningfull in the NBA. People have gone as far as to project that McRoberts will be a straight up bust (and it seems like most making decisions at the draft agreed). Some of you guys complain that we need a PF to deal with the hotshots in the western conference. If you think Fazekas and company could handle these guys you are mistaken. Most these guys play smaller than they are since they settle for outside shooting and jump shots. He had plans in place to make moves in draft night but they fell through because of the actions of OTHER teams. You really can't get too upset about what you do or do not get with the 26th pick. Also, it's not Morey's fault that we don't have valuable trade assets or money to spend. He can only do so much with what he's got.
And how many times has a franchise been turned around with the 26th, 31st, and 54th picks? And if they were turned around with those picks, do you think anybody expected it on draft night? No, or else they would not have been taken so low.
Many also assumed that Morey only used moneyball to evaluate his players/draft picks, now we know that isn't the case since he drafted players that didn't have great stats and skipped out on ones that did.
rserina - Has it escaped you exactly how underwhelming the ROX drafts are on a regular basis. Has it escaped you that individuals we draft rarely stay on the ROX team for more than 2-3 years, and then are usually out of the league a few years later? Do you remember drafting Derrick Chievous? Do you remember Lampe? Do you remember Thursday night? Morey and his B.S. Moneyball crap is exactly that. You can paint lipstick on this turd of a draft all you want, but Morey screwed up in a SERIOUSLY deep draft. We got 3 guys, and only one of them is guaranteed to be on an NBA roster for at least 3 years!!!
I can't believe people are having heart attacks over passing on people like Davis, McRoberts, and Fazekas. Can anyone guarantee that those guys can play on the NBA level? We had the 26th pick and would be lucky to draft a contributor. People are acting like we passed up on all-stars.
its very comical reading your posts. you my friend have serious issues if you think this draft screwed our season.
Landry's stats weren't that bad for his three years at Purdue, most recently his last season of 18.9 ppg and 7.3 rpg. Granted they aren't Oden/Durant numbers, but they aren't bad either.
